Friday Night Sunset @ The Living Room!

*** A headlamp is strongly suggested as we will likely be staying to watch the sunset and the city lights ***

This hike is a great way to end the week, we will hike to The Living Room to relax, watch the sun set and enjoy the view. The hike to The Living Room is 2.6 miles round trip and has an elevation gain of 980’.

Driving Directions: from I-80 east are to take exit 129 for Foothill Drive (Exit 1 from I215 north) and continue north for 3.1 miles on Foothill Drive. Turn right onto Wakara Way and go around 0.6 miles.

Trail Description: To get to the Living Room we will head towards the Shoreline Trail on the east side of the Natural History Museum. At the Shoreline Trail we will go right and follow the trail south until the trail splits and we will head towards Georges Hollow. At the mouth of Georges Hollow are many trail splits and it is confusing as to which one to take. Try to stay to the right on the trail which follows the drainage of Georges Hollow. Eventually the trail veers left for the ridgeline and at .85 miles when the trail reaches the ridgeline; there are views of the valley. Past here the trail follows the ridge to the Living Room junction at 1.15 miles, which isn't posted. Go left and the trail gets easier along the mountainside to the Living Room which is reached at 1.28 miles. You will find stone chairs to sit on and relax. Enjoy the view!

Dogs are allowed on this hike:

During the summer there may be rattlesnakes present on or near the trail. Please review the rattlesnake safety tips on the below link. Seeing a rattlesnake can be an enjoyable experience and a welcome addition to the hike!

Be sure to carry plenty of water as it can be hot on this trail. Additionally please be prepared for the hike, the below link is a good resource for beginners to review before hiking.

After the hike there will be the option of heading down someplace else to socialize. There are many options available such as The Canyon Inn to sit by the fire or any of the numerous locations in the area where live music is played on Friday nights.

Also if you do decide to skip due to weather we will still be going out after and you are welcome to still come, most likely we will go to either Fidler's Elbow or Salt Lake Pizza and Pasta

This event will go no matter what the weather, if lightning is an issue we will hike from same location but stay low and avoid ridges and the actual Living Room

Is this event happening rain or shine? ... I might need to run home and get my rain jacket :)

Yep! Rain or shine, unless there is lightning. Bring a rainjacket, don't wear cotton, etc. etc. Usually when it has been storming the sunset is spectacular!

I'm going to plan on taking a group up at 7:15pm. Meet in the usual spot (SE corner of the parking lot of NHMU), leave promptly at 7:15pm. We will meet the first group at the top to socialize and watch the sunset.

Hi Pervin. Not sure if you got a reply. I've seen kids on this hike as young as 7 or 8. It has some steep parts, but overall, it's a reasonable hike. ;-)
