Functional Reporting with Edward Kmett

The paradigm of functional programming is on the rise, with big data and multi-core architecture utilization contributing to its wider adoption in the industry. In November #vblatu will be hosting a functional programming veteran and an active haskell contributor - Edward Kmett.

Edward will be talking about the challenges and benefits of adopting functional programming in the enterprise.

In particular he'll focus on the benefits for parallelism and prototyping, and the power of treating business concerns as language problems.

Presenter Bio:

Edward Kmett currently maintains ~100 packages in Haskell w/ hundreds of collaborators and chairs the Haskell core libraries committee.

He is apparently the 10th most active user on github, and maintains a compiler for the Haskell-like language, Ermine, for S&P Capital IQ.

The talk was very interesting, it showed that functional languages have a lot of practical uses. It was great to listen to someone who knows so much about the subject. Questions (and especially answers) at the end were very informative. The only downside IMO was the complexity of the topic. I think most of the people had a hard time following him and understanding everything. Still, very inspiring.
