Why did you decide to go veg?

My initial motivating factor, when I was still a teenager, was concern for the environment - primarily pollution caused by factory farming, as well as an obscene waste of natural resources caused by raising grain and bean crops to feed to livestock. After a couple of years, I learned more about the health and wellness aspects of living as a vegetarian. Last year, I decided to eliminate as many animal products as possible from my diet and life, because I heard some information on an NPR show, explaining that going vegan was similar in carbon footprint reduction to switching from a large, gas-guzzling vehicle, to driving a semi-electric car. I do care immensely about animal welfare, & volunteer at an animal shelter, but I find it difficult to believe that is the largest concern we face, considering the serious impact of global warming, and continued waste of resources for satiating the greed of a meat-hungry population. The health of the environment has always been my primary motivator.

What are your favorite vegan foods?

I home culture nut cheeses, coconut yogurt, and find culturing foods to be a gratifying process. My favorite food is probably papaya, but I also love saag aloo (curried spinach with potatoes), homemade salsa on beans and rice, raw soups, and assorted vegan ethnic foods. I enjoy cooking, and prepare most of my own food, so I frequently order new cookbooks and experiment with a wide variety of interesting cruelty-free foods.

Vegetarian since 2000, vegan since December 2011. I work in the fitness industry, where (misinformed) emphasis is placed on protein consumption, primarily from animals. It would be nice to interact with some people whose views are similar to my own.
