The Vegan Families in Portland and Vicinity Meet Up Group is intended to provide a social network for vegan (or transitioning to vegan) families with children (under 18 years). It is a place for members to find like-minded friends for themselves and their children. Meet-up events are planned by the members themselves, rather than by one specific organizer. All members have the ability to plan meet ups and add notes about outside events to the calendar. We use this group as a way to get connected and have fun. Members can also participate in online discussions related to parenting, raising vegan children, resources to help others, and the like.

This group is open to all types of families, including but not limited to: expectant parents, single parents, married, partnerships, unions, grandparents, and other caregivers of vegan children. We also accept members who are not yet vegan but who are interested in transitioning to a vegan lifestyle and are looking for support in that goal. Please note, however, to bring only vegan food to any shared-food events (no fish, no meat, no eggs, no dairy, no honey, and no animal by-products, such as gelatin).

The Vegan Families in Portland and Vicinity Meet Up Group is sponsored by vegetarian education and empowerment group Northwest VEG (http://www.nwveg.org). While we like to participate in events organized by NW VEG, the meet ups of our group are organized by members themselves. Also, membership in NW VEG is not required for membership in this meet up group.

Feel free to email the organizers of the group with any suggestions you may have.

Group Guidelines:

RSVP: It is critical to communicate that you are an active part of the group, so please RSVP ("Yes," "Maybe," "No") for events as best you can. If you have RSVP'd "YES" and find you cannot attend, then please change your RSVP to "NO." Due to reservations, seating, food planning, etc., it is crucial that all "YES" RSVPs attend.

PROFILE: It is mandatory that all members have a profile and a user name. It is encouraged that you have a photo and fully complete the profile questions. Not doing so makes it difficult for other members to get to know you.

BE ACTIVE: Please be active in the group by setting your email settings so that you will receive reminders and other correspondence from the group. Also, please check the site regularly. And ideally, host an occasional meet up of your own. This is a member organized and supported group designed for socializing. The official organizers alone cannot keep the calendar loaded with events. Every member of the group is assigned the member role of "event organizer" on the Meet Up site, which means he/she can host their own meet-up events (hosts are expected to attend the events they organize or at least RSVP "no" or cancel the meet up if something comes up). Meet ups can be spontaneous or planned ahead by a few weeks. They can be simple to execute, like a suggestion to join you at a destination (e.g., park, library, community event, coffee shop), or a more significant event (e.g., picnic, pot luck, party). See the "Scheduling Your Meet Up Events" section for further suggestions.

IDEAS, DISCUSSIONS, and other POSTS: Feel free to email individuals in the group or the whole group itself, post ideas, and participate in discussions. Any topic is open as long as the group is not being used for business solicitation or to forward some agenda (besides promoting veganism!). Members can also post notes to the calendar about outside events that might be of interest to members (like vegan bake sales, benefits, rallies, etc.). The organizers have the right to remove any material that is deemed inappropriate.

PRIVACY: Our meet-up group is currently set to "private." This means nonmembers cannot see much information about the group (no member names, profiles, "Latest Activity" info, posts, or meet-up event information). This information is only viewable once a potential member's request to join has been accepted.

SOLICITATION: If you have a business and want to promote it (through group sponsorship or other advertising) to our members, then please email one of the organizers to discuss this option. Sending direct solicitations to members of the group is not appropriate and members who do so may be removed from the group at the organizers' discretion.

(Also visit the "Scheduling Your Meet Up Events" section for further information on how to plan your own meetup.)

Please always feel free to email the organizer and co-organizers with questions or comments. Your feedback is always appreciated.
