This meetup is a work in progress, but I want to get it posted and then offer up some details over the next 48 hours.
As many of you may know, The Ringling Brother's Barnum and Bailey Circus cruelly confines and trains elephants and tigers, and animals for entertainment in general is highly problematic. For more information: http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com/
While I often don't agree with PETA tactics, I think this is a worthy campaign. A lot of people simply don't know or think about the abuse entertainment animals face, so merely showing a presence and peacefully objecting to their use can be a powerful eye opener. People may still attend, but a seed will have been planted and they may not attend the next year. I think it's extremely important to come across as friendly and approachable to passers by, as confrontation typically only entrenches people further in their beliefs.
PETA helps organize protests as Ringling moves city to city, and anyone who subscribes to PETA alerts in Tucson has been notified about the planned protest at the following dates and times and information:
"Protests usually begin about an hour before showtime and at the end of the show for about 30 minutes. Protesting at both the beginning and end of shows is very important, for some the message is more accepted after viewing the animals. You do not have any need to confront or even speak to anyone attending the circus if you do not want to. Just having bodies holding signs makes an impact. Protesters will be gathering at the entrance to the Tucson Convention Center.
Show times this year are:
Thurs. June 20, 7pm (protests at 6pm and 9:30)
Fri. June 21, 11am and 7pm (protests at 10am and 1:30pm, 6pm and 9:30pm)
Sat. June 22, 11am, 3pm and 7pm (protests at 10am and 1:30pm, 2pm and 5:30pm, 6pm and 9:30pm)
Sun. June 23, 1pm and 5pm (protests at 12pm and 3:30pm, 4pm and 7:30pm"
Someone in town has setup a Facebook event page at:
and I've posted on the event requesting they email me as I'd like to find out if they have leaflets and signs which PETA supplies for free, but it's a little bit late to order from them. However we could get some copies printed up.
If you're interested this, please RSVP and in the comments indicate the date and times you'll be there. Or if you prefer, just show up when you can.
Thanks Deb for bringing this up and Wendy for forwarding me the PETA email.
