May/June Newsletter: Earth Friendly Food Choices

Hi Earthsaver,

Earthsave Baltimore welcomes all who are interested in learning and promoting a healthier, sustainable, peaceful way of eating and living. Here's info on some great local events that are approaching. For a detailed list of events, see MarylandVegEvents.com.

Thanks to Ginny Presley Robertson for the outstanding talk she did for our group at our April dinner. And congratulations to Ginny on the big success of the sale of women's clothing that she organizes to benefit the Light of Truth recovery system for women. Ginny and I turn our home into women's boutique for a week each year. And we collect clothing for the next sale throughout the year.

Interest in plant-based food choices and veg/vegan lifestyle has grown dramatically in the last few years and continues to grow. We can see that interest in the rapid growth of discussion and support groups locally and on social media. In the Baltimore area, rarely does a week go by without an opportunity to attend a social or educational veg/vegan related event

Hope that you were able to attend the fifth annual Baltimore VegFest. It's growing by leaps and bounds! There were probably 5000 attendees, about twice the number as last year. And we had a beautiful day, great food and venders, and outstanding presentations and music. We had a blast meeting making new friends and reconnecting with others at the Earthsave info and book sales table. See photos of the event in my Earthsave Baltimore photo album on Facebook. You can find me most easily by going on Facebook and searching for earthsaverdon.

Earthsave has another great presentation lined up for our May veg dinner event at Towson Presbyterian Church in Towson, with the presentation "Food As Medicine" by Baltimore based cardiologist Monica Aggarwal, MD. We're really looking forward to it, and hope you will join us!

Vegetarian Summerfest, a big favorite event for Baltimore area folks, is fast approaching. It's a wonderful five day educational conference that features many of the very best authors and educators on nutrition, health, and the veg/vegan lifestyle. It's held at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, PA, and will happen July 8th through 12th. Hope to see you there!

There are numerous other opportunities to get together with like-minded people over some great veg/vegan food. There's a brand new potluck dinner series with speakers in Columbia, which is hosted by our friend Ken Schaffer. And there's another one that local physician Joseph Adams, MD, is hosting twice per month at the Park Heights Community Health Alliance, in Baltimore, which will also feature talks and food demos. More info below.

Another wonderful event we're looking forward to is the 2nd Annual Baltimore Vegan Soulfest, a free event, which last year attracted more than 1200 people and was a big success. The event will move to a larger venue this year, and will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at Baltimore City Community College. More info is below.

You might consider joining one or more of the Facebook support groups listed below. I host two of the groups, and especially enjoy participating in the global group Earth Friendly Food Choices, which is real active and welcoming.

Hope that you will also consider supporting our group by becoming a dues paying member. See the details and benefits near the bottom of this newsletter. There's lots more helpful info below.

Please note that our June meeting will happen earlier than usual, on June 20th. Hope to see or hear from you soon!

Peace... Don Robertson

VIDEO - "A Life Connected" is a terrific, upbeat 12-minute video that explains the vegan lifestyle and philosophy. Excellent for both children and adults! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6_hjA4cdjM

VIDEO - "Earthlings" is a 60 minute presentation, a sobering documentary about the most common ways that animals suffer at the hands of man. It's very well done, though not easy to watch. http://EARTHLINGS.com/
