** More about Catskill Animal Sanctuary
------------------------------------------------------------

Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS) is a 110-acre haven for horses and farm animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. In addition to emergency rescue, CAS provides innovative programs that educate the public about the sentience of farm animals, and the devastating impacts of agribusiness and institutionalized cruelty on animals, people, and the planet.

CAS offers weekend and special group tours, vegan cooking classes, speaking engagements, a summer day camp for kids, and a host of compassionate programming year round at its primarily solar-powered Sanctuary. Lodging and meeting space are available on site at The Homestead, a beautifully-renovated pre-Revolutionary farmhouse.

Since 2001, CAS has rescued over 2,000 animals, and has worked in tandem with law enforcement to bring animal abusers to justice. Founder/Director Kathy Stevens blogs for the Huffington Post and is the author of the highly-acclaimed book Where the Blind Horse Sings and the just-published Animal Camp.

The day was fabulous! I had a wonderful time chatting with people, petting the animals, hearing their stories, tasting the food and wine, and buy a beautiful new necklace. The day was perfect until 4 pm rolled around and there was no bus back to the city, no clear information about when and if the bus was really coming, and after an hour it was no longer funny. People were starting to get irritated and then finally the bus arrived at 5 pm. When the bus was nearly full up and there were just a few people outside the bus waiting to board, the bus began to roll backwards down the hill.... while the driver was standing outside the bus! There were a few seconds of panic until this wonderful young man dropped to the floor and held the brake down with his hands to stop the bus. He undoubtedly prevented a tragedy from happening!

Wonderful outing, fabulous place my 2nd time there), perfect day...... except for TERRIBLE transportation planning. Thank you, CAS and fellow vegans <3

I am truly disillusioned by the complete lack or organization for the travel part of this trip, despite the wonderful facility itself. Having an old smelly and dirty bus, a bus driver who basically seemed not to know what he was doing, an organizer who would not take responsibility by communicating with all of us in a timely manner to help expedite our trip home - and if not for the heroic and quick-thinking young man (whose name I do not know but who has my heartfelt gratitude) who, when the bus driver parked the bus on an incline that was off road and almost impossible to get onto, and then the brake loosened and we started rolling backwards down the incline - if that wonderful man had not stepped in and had the presence of mind to get down on his hands and knees to hold the brake down, I do not even want to think about the tragedy that might have occurred... Pas - please think long and hard about what being an organizer/leader means to you because you really let us down.

Catskill Animal Sanctuary did NOT organize or lead the bus from NYC, but we're sorry to hear of this! We're truly grateful that no one was injured.

Michelle - I know CAS was not in any way a part of this problem. This was strictly about poor organization on the part of the group organizer. Your facility and the day was lovely and inspiring to see and learn about. The trip to/from and the long wait time and all - well, enough said. Thankfully, we all arrived home safe and sound despite the many challenges. Take care.

What a bust! I drove an extra hour out of my way to the address listed – only to get there and be told that I couldn’t park there (which wasn’t mentioned in the Vegan Meetup email). I was handed a printout with a long list of driving instructions, but no one seemed to know how far away the parking was, how often the shuttle buses were running, or how long the trip would take. I realized that this unfortunate development would add at least another hour or two to my visit – driving further north, waiting for a bus to take me south, then waiting for another bus to take me back north to my car, then driving south again. I had no choice but to turn around and drive an hour back to where I started from. Very disappointing. Next time, it’ll be Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary that will get my visit, and my dollars. At least they have onsite parking.

Understood, Michelle. That's why I pointed out that the Vegan Meetup listing (this page) failed to mention that very important information. Had it done so, I simply wouldn't have attempted the trip... Lesson learned: I won't try to participate in another Vegan Meetup-related event without first doing my own homework!

That said, the fact remains that your onsite volunteers could have been a *lot* better informed than they were.

CAS really does appreciate your and everyone's feedback on what people enjoyed and how we can improve the event in the future. We've taken your input to heart and will incorporate it into future planning. Thanks so much for reaching out :)

On behalf of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, I want to thank all those who came to the 12th Annual Shindig! It was a pleasure to see many familiar faces and to welcome new ones. We hope you enjoyed meeting our rescued farm animal friends, the vegan chow, the live music, hayrides, product vendors and silent auction. Feel free to share what you enjoyed and what CAS can improve upon by emailing me directly at [masked]. Hope to see you again next year! -- Michelle Alvarez, Outreach Director, Catskill Animal Sanctuary.

I am now going with a friend in her car. Is there a way to sell my bus ticket to someone? I hate to waste the seat when so many want to go, but with it all being electronic, not sure how I could sell it.
