Veg Night Out! - Rooftop Drinks at 230 Fifth

[Note from David: The last two Augusts we did this same event and our members have been asking to go back. 230 Fifth is acknowledged as NYC's best rooftop bar, as well as its biggest. There is something magical about it -- the outstanding views, and the large and beautiful space. This place gets packed during the summer. Fortunately we have our own large seating area. Read the reviews below from New York Magazine and Zagat. They'll give you a sense of why everyone loves this place.]

“230 Fifth” is a plush lounge located on the 20th floor of the building formerly known as the Victoria Hotel in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. It consists of two floors with 8,000 sq. ft of enclosed space and a magnificently landscaped 14,000 sq. ft rooftop garden. It is the largest rooftop garden in Manhattan. You’ll be in love with the great views of the city this venue has to offer of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Statue of Liberty, and Hudson River.

What better way to beat the heat than to cool down with drinks while taking in the spectacular views from the rooftop at 230 Fifth! Due to popular request, we are gathering for a well-deserved drinks night to mix and mingle with new and old friends!

7-9pm

230 Fifth Ave., 20th fl., New York, NY10001

It's a New York Magazine's Critics' Pick.  Here's what New York Magazine says about this lovely venue:

The staid marble lobby of the office building that was formerly the Victoria Hotel does little to prepare one for the scene on the 20th floor: If the 8,000-square foot room pimped out in walls of partitioned glass, dark op-art pile carpet, and purple fluorescent lights recalls Studio 54, it's because the owner, art collector Steven Greenberg, has spared no expense in making it as lavish as his previous projects, the Roxy and the Palladium. The Sue et Mare couch came from Karl Lagerfeld's collection, and a maze of other low-to-the-ground loungers such as a kiss-shaped velour loveseat are similarly flamboyant. The skyline twinkles beyond floor-to-ceiling windows framed by white curtains, but the scene is even more impressive on the massive roof deck where an endless array of wood benches and sturdy garden chairs invite no less than 500 quitting-timers and night owls to take in unobstructed views of the Empire State Building to the north, the Met Life building to the east, and Jersey to the west. As the palm trees rustle and the old-fashioned cocktails kick in, you can easily imagine Don Johnson landing his helicopter near the stuffed zebra and cruising for foxy investment bankers.

From the Zagat Nightlife guide:

There's lots of "scene and scenery" to be had at this "commanding" duplex near Madison Square, voted Most Popular nightspot in NYC; its "giant" "greenery"-lined foof deck with "killer views" of the Empire State Building draws "throngs" of "flirty corporate" who ignore the "sky-high" tabs and penthouse level that looks "like something out of Scarface"; even though some of the crowd seems to be "auditioning for the Jersey Shore", this one's "magical" on a summer night, and it's even accessible in winter thanks to "robes and heat lamps."

Here's a great reference site for vegan beer, wine, and other liquor: http://www.barnivore.com

With all the wonderful vegetarians and vegans who attend each of our events, every event we do is liked by our members, but our "Veg Night Out!" events are the most popular of all. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people), and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans.

For our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We'll have our own section in the club, and you can get to know all our wonderful members.

People sometimes ask, so I'll mention: this event is free. (We would tell you if there was a cover charge.) There is no cover, no minimum. But please do buy a drink or two, or as many as you like. :) This is a drinking event after all. (Note: there is a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks available, if you prefer to avoid alcohol.)

How To Find Our Group at 230 Fifth: After entering the front door to 230 Fifth Avenue, you will be directed to an elevator to the 20th Floor (Penthouse level).  In the Penthouse you'll see a staircase to the roof.  On the roof, look for the sign: "NYC Vegetarian and Vegan Meetup".  That is our section.

Come relax and imbibe drinks (alcoholic or virgin, however you like 'em) after work with us at 230 Fifth! Cheers!

Mondays or Tuesdays don't work for me. I work a later schedule (late afternoon until midnight) at a hospital and I'm not available for after work hours (for 9 to 5ers). If there's anything on a Wednesday or a weekend (off two weekends a month); I will attend.

Really nice outdoor venue. Met some great people. One person pointed out that this group has more than 7,000 members. Now that I know that - I'm impressed :)

Is this is a good event to come to alone as my first time? or does everyone already know each other? What's the best event to get to know a few people?

Does anyone know if there will be any food available?

    1 · August 18, 2014

    • David G.

There is food, but it is mostly not vegan. You may want to plan to get a snack (or dinner) before or after the event.
