VegOut is taking the August Potluck to this federal style idyll once again. How awesome were those Governors Island potlucks last year?
There is a ferry that goes to Governors Island from 10 South Street (ornate Battery Maritime Building) - just to the left of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. We’ll be leaving on the 12:30pm ferry (it’s free!). It's a big ferry so we should meet on the Governors Island side for all those who get on the ferry at the last minute. You’re allowed to board up until the ferry pulls out of the dock. The ferry runs every 30 minutes for anyone who wants to come earlier/later than 12:30pm. Once we arrive on the island we’ll head over to our veg-centric idyll called Picnic Point and Hammocks. There are Trams (trolleys) that take you there or you can walk. There are lots of signs and helpful staff to guide you if you decide to come earlier or later. So feel free to meet us there as well. By 1:00pm or so the large carrot VegOut banner will be unfurled (the one in our group photo). And if we're thus inclined around 3:00 or 3:30 we'll pack up our things (lighter load as we'll have eaten) and check out the galleries and exhibits on the island. If we prefer to loll in the hammocks and yack then we'll do just that. The last ferry to the island on weekends is 5:30pm and the last ferry back to Manhattan (and Brooklyn) is 7pm. Bikes are allowed on the ferry so bike riding vegans are welcomed.
Potluck amenities: tables, new lush grass, hammocks, adirondack chairs and swings. Apparently there is plenty of art as well. Bathrooms are plentiful. We'll have plates, cups and utensils in tow. Feel free to bring your own if you would like to.
