Event #1 of the VeloDCity Challenge -Hills of Alexandria - who knew there were a few

NOTE: A LIABILITY WAIVER WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BEFORE THE RIDE - If you don't sign one you will not be allowed to participate in the ride - I will have waivers at the ride start.

Welcome to the 1st ride of the new year. Time to get the legs going for the season ahead. This is will be a B to A pace ride, and meant as a training ride so go ahead an push yourself - its only 30 miles. Please know the route as it crisscrosses itself a few times

After meandering through Old Town and along the river this ride gets going with a climb up the steep Belle View Blvd. Then traces the GW Parkway through the neighborhoods for a loop around Fort Hunt Park before heading over to a few loops around the Hollin Hills neighborhood (and it lives up to its name). Lots of punchy but not too long climbs. Then back through Old Town to the metro station. We can take a detour in Old Town at the end of the ride for a bite to eat.

Please note that this is meant to be a training ride so not as recreational as some other of our Meetup rides. But also not meant to be a hammer fest. Goal is to have a nice strong effort to get some base miles in the the legs before the season begins

Total distance:approx 30 miles
Total elevation climbed: approx 1,800 feet
Pace: Medium: 15-17 mph avg (slower going up, faster going down); Category B/B+ ride
Terrain: lots of short but steep climbs
Start/Finish: King Street Station Metro/blue-yellow lines
Highlights: Old Town Alexandria, Potomac River, a saw tooth elevation
The route can be viewed at the link below:
