Climbing Training Event #1 - Arlington Hills - 30 miles - 2,800 ft

  • Ballston Metro

4230 Fairfax Dr, Arlington, VA (map)

    38.882037 -77.111533

  • meet at the Cosi across from Metro Entrance
  • *****RIDE UPDATE***** 2nd group added**** Please read below

Thanks to Gregg being willing to lead a 2nd group we will be expanding the ride size.  We will establish two groups, I will lead the 1st group (think B/B+ pace not a hammerfest pace) and Gregg (think B and slower pace) will lead the 2nd group.  Please update your RSVP/comments with what group you think you will ride with.  We want to try and start out with two equally sized groups. The 2nd group will start a few minutes behind the 1st group.  This way if folks drop off the 1st group during the ride they can slow down/wait for the 2nd group to come up the road. There will be a few short stops to regroup (not a regular rest stop) after a few series of hills (to try and maintain the 2 seperate groups as best as possible). As a reminder this ride has a lot of climbing, you'll be continuously going up and down more punchy shorter climbs so be adequately prepared.

Again helmets off to Gregg for being willing to help as a 2nd ride leader.

Feel free to meet back up at the Cosi post ride for lunch/refreshments.

This year I plan to hold most likely once or twice a month a ride focused on the dreaded hill climbing. To get the base miles going, the 1st event will be thru the hills of Arlington. For those of you that have ridden the Conte's & or Revolutions mid week rides before this is a combination of the two. Lots of ups and downs but no long climbs. This is meant to be a training ride so not as recreational as some other of our Meetup rides. But also not meant to be a hammer fest like the Conte's ride can be. Goal is to have a nice strong effort to get some base miles in the the legs before the season begins

    Total distance:approx 30 miles
Total elevation climbed: approx 2,800 feet
Pace: Medium: 14-17 mph avg (slower going up, faster going down); On the category systems call it a B/B+ ride
Terrain: Gregg would call it hilly, I would call it lots of rollers with a few punchy but short roller
    Start/Finish: Ballston Metro/Orange Line
Highlights: Rosslyn Climb, Military Road, tired legs
The route/cue sheet can be viewed at the link below:

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2037788

    HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION:
    - ID, spare tube, portable tire pump recommended

    - clip in cleats or cages highly recommended
    - This is a no stop ride so bring enough drink/food to get you through 30 miles - We can grab a bite after the ride at the Cosi next to the Metro
    - The event will be cancelled/postponed in event of rain/snow or if it is below 30 degrees (there's only so much cold I can take)
    - email me if you have any questions

I didn't leave home until 10 am. Headed across Key Bridge, worse wind than last week's ride. Then out MacArthur to Great Falls with a head wind all the way. On the return I did a lap at Hains point and got blown sideways crossing the 14th St Bridge.

If you could send the map link for the hills of Glen Echo. I do the 30 miles from MD109 to Seven locks Rd. on River Rd. from time tro time and have found myself wondering what else is behind all those houses along the way

    February 16, 2013

    • bud

Hey Carlos, I don't have the google maps route but if you email me I will tell you the hills we do, Mt Gate, Brickyard, Anglers, etc.

      February 17, 2013

  • Matt

With the temps potentially not even hitting 30 and with the wind chill it'll feel more like being in the teens I've decided to cancel the ride for today. No need to risk people getting sick from being out in the cold. I want everyone to suffer b/c of the climbing, not the cold :). I'll search for a date w/i next couple of months to reschedule.

It's pretty damn cold outside right now, so I think I will take a raincheck and see if the weather warms up later during the day. sorry for the late notice!

I'll be heading out for a mid day ride. The hills of rock creek is what I'm thinking. I'm not
Liking the forecast for that time of morning when I have the full day that I can ride. See ya next time.

20 mph winds at 32 degrees tomorrow. What does that translate with wind chill riding at 15 mph?

2 inches of snow this weekend. Mostly on Saturday.

    February 14, 2013

From Friday evening to just before midnight on Saturday night the percipitation could be a problem. Are we crossing our fingers for no accumulation/ice, or hoping we can catch a break and not have to climb? ;)

I'm sorry to drop out after the RSVPs have closed but something has come up and I won't be able to make it. I hope that if anyone's still waiting there's time to give them my spot.

Anybody game for a trial run this afternoon? Say Feb[masked]? Or maybe 15th is better?

    February 14, 2013

  • Joanne N.

For those of you who routinely ride in below freezing weather, what cold weather gear do you recommend for Sunday? I'm contemplating adding a balaclava to the usual mix of gloves, booties, leggings, etc. Any other tips? Insulated water bottles?

    1 · February 13, 2013

    • MorenoCubanito (.

Joanne, everything you said. I have gear good for sub 20 degrees. I just can never keep my toes warm.

      February 14, 2013

    • Haider H.

My toes don't feel the cold since I put on booties. Joe, you should give them some consideration. They look goofy but it's surprising how much cold whips under the toe area of cycling shoes. My izumi's don't fit as well as I like but they provide wonderful shielding from the cold. The added bonus is staying dry in weather. I'm not a fan of heat packs (being diabetic makes them verboten (circulation issues)) but I know people that swear by them.

      February 14, 2013

  • bud

Hey guys, is this a go? Temps will be below freezing at 9am so going down hill will be tough ya know, so you will need a vest plus everything else just to block the wind.

    February 14, 2013

  • Gregg

I guess this counts me in the second group. Just a few observations from the this morning's recon ride with Matt. 1) The route goes through some busy intersections with some easy to miss turns. 2) The climbs can be rated as 'not so difficult', 'general difficult' and 15+ miles tired difficult'. 3) The road conditions were not great in some sections due rough surfaces(ie potholes), lots of sand/debris/etc. The major culprit just happened to take place on the major descent portions of the route. In other words: this is no beginner's ride and YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Factoring in the previously mentioned items and the size of the group: there's much that can go wrong so think about your skills and your comfort level before clicking 'Yes'.

    1 · February 10, 2013

    • Gregg

The ride cancellation conditions is stated in the ride details(end of description), in this case <30's. A final decision will be emailed and posted 3~5 hours prior to ride start or much earlier if the forecasts calls for it. Please monitor your emails and the message board any announcements.

      February 14, 2013

    • Delores

Gregg, sorry I was not clear. I saw a member no show/cancellation policy somewhere but I cannot seem to find it. That is the info I need. At this point, the winds are expected to be around 17 mph with a high of 32...the last time i tried to do something like that i was miserable. So still checking weather and trying to decide if it is a go for me. Thanks for everything you guys do to make these rides happen!
