Details
TRIP TITLE / DATES / IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
Backpack THREE Nights Carrizo Trail
VWA TRAIL CREW LEADER:
Betsy MacGowan
OVERVIEW:
BACKPACKING TRIP
HIKE a total of 5.5 miles to the work location. On Friday we will hike 3.2 miles from the trailhead at the Railroad Bridge on Road 6 to camp at Carrizo Springs Camp on the Carrizo Trail. On Friday we will work on brush and tread in the half mile before the camp. Saturday we will hike another 2.5 miles to the section of the trail where we cleared many fallen trees on Memorial Day weekend. We will clear brush from this section of the trail in the last mile before the Cook Springs Camp turn off. The historic Carrizo Trail has views for miles in addition to passing through interesting sandstone formations. The entire trail burned in August, 2020, in the Dolan Fire and we are trying to keep it clear from the rapid regrowth of brush that follows any fire in the Ventana.
This is a strenuous hike and a lot of elevation gain. You must be in good physical condition to participate.
You may choose to participate in part of the trip. This must be approved by the leader in advance.
THE WORK:
This trip will focus on clearing thick, burned sections of brush from the last mile before the Cook Springs Camp turnoff. There is work for all abilities. Beginner to expert. Tools and instruction provided. The work location doesn't have a lot of poison oak. Long sleeves and long pants are recommended even for the hike in.
MEET: Friday: Road 6 Friday morning 8 A.M. DON'T BE LATE!
There may be a separate group starting Saturday 8:00 A.M. Stay tuned for details.
IMPORTANT:
UPDATE 9/28/22:
In your mapping program search for:
Timothy Bottoms, Salsipuedes Ranch, Road 21S03, Jolon, CA 93928
This takes longer than you think it should because of slow speeds on Jolon Road (the CHP patrols this road so don't go too fast), and on Fort Hunter Liggett (the Army patrols this road and REALLY don't go too fast). Once you leave the main post area you probably still don't want to go too fast because there may be deer and hunters.
Take Jolon Road from 101 South just before King City, turn right to Fort Hunter Liggett. Pass the main entrance, then at a strange 5-way intersection take a sharp left on Del Venturi Road towards the Santa Lucia Memorial Park area. After you cross the Forest Service boundary, look for Road 6 on the left. You will pass Road 4 on the left, then Road 5 on the left. We will meet at the beginning of Road 6. The road signs are small blocks of wood painted white. Sometimes they fall over. So keep your eyes open for a dirt road to the left past roads 4 and 5. Once assembled, we will drive down another mile or so to the trailhead.
LEADER APPROVAL REQUIRED for partial attendance; contact leader for trip and meeting details.
