Author of "Sense and Goodness Without God:A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism"
Richard Carrier Bio
Richard Carrier, whose last successful talk with AU Ventura drew the largest crowd in our short history for a regular meeting, will be presenting a talk entitled:
"Christian Hostility to Scientific Values in the Ancient World"
Today, it's a cliché that fundamentalist Christians are opposed to science and openly attack it. Did you know that been a part of Christian heritage for two thousand years? Christians often look so amazingly stupid when you quote them, and ancient Christians are even more amusing on that count. Richard will present what the earliest Christians said about ancient science, and compare it with some of the science actually going on at the time throughout the Roman world.
If you have not already purchased his acclaimed book "Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism" where he makes the case for naturally occurring morality within the context of human evolution and the rise of a scientifically-based ethical system, make sure to bring your pocket book with you to get a copy after his talk.
You may consider attending his companion presentation at the AU General Meeting at CFI West, 4773 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90027, on the preceding Sunday, October 28th, 11am, where he'll be giving a talk entitled, "Ancient Scientists and their Principal Achievements." He will survey some of the most impressive accomplishments of Greek and Roman scientists in the areas of physiology, astronomy, cartography, and mechanics, with some discussion of how these achievements were possible.
Atheists United is launching a drive to collect canned and clothing for victims of the recent So. California fires and is asking all of their chapters and affiliates to do the same at their upcoming meetings.
During this meeting we will be prepared to accept donations of food, clothing, bathroom products, diapers and money donations to help relieve the suffering of those who have lost their homes in the ongoing California wild fires. If you are planning on attending, please consider giving as a concrete example of the compassion that humans are capable of in times of crisis.
If you cannot attend this meeting, please consider giving at the Red Cross or your preferred charity.
