  • Visual Trumpery with Alberto Cairo

    Netflix

We humans are visual creatures. Our brains can extract meaning from abstract symbols, such as words and numbers, but they are much faster and more efficient at processing elementary perceptual features, such as variations in heights, lengths, sizes, colors, etc. That's why data visualization works. Visualization consists on proportionally mapping numbers onto those perceptual features to enable discovery and understanding by unearthing the patterns and trends that large amounts of data often hide, which explains why it's being adopted by people from a huge variety of domains and disciplines. Join Alberto Cairo as he explains the main principles of data visualization and how you can improve your visual literacy to improve how you read and make data visualization. Agenda 6PM - Networking with refreshments (drinks and pizza) 7PM - Cairo Talk on Visual Literacy 8PM - Show and tell of current data visualization work by audience members

Participants must attend the opening (May 23th) and closing events (May 30th) in San Francisco. It's going to be a lot of fun! Challenges 1. Save the planet with Hydrao Our connected showerhead stores a large volume of data measured during showers: pressure, volume of water, user habits and location of the shower. This data is quite unique: new applications can result, especially if properly correlated with publicly available data (water parameters, maps, ...) The challenge is to demonstrate a visually striking application of our data. Your project will be judged based on Originality, Relevance, and Quality of the pitch. 2. Leverage QuasarDB's power QuasarDB is a time series database with extreme ingress and real-time processing capabilities. It is typically used for real-time processing of market data, and predictive maintenance. How to demonstrate QuasarDB's power in a visual way? Your project will be judged based on Relevance. CLOSING NIGHT - Tuesday, May 30th 10:00 AM Final Coding and Submission Deadline 5:30 PM Project presentations – Judging and voting begins 7:00 PM Panel deliberations / mingle and snacks for participants 8:00 PM Awards 9:00 PM Closing Rules There will be three tracks with a different API for each. Your team (1 to 4 people, everyone needs to register for the event) must select and compete in one track only, there will be common prizes for the whole hackathon. All code developed as part of the IMPACT hackathon must be fresh. To keep things fair, all codes must be written during the length of the hackathon starting at 8:15 pm on Tuesday. Other than that, almost anything goes and you can use any coding languages, open-source libraries, and APIs. HACKATHON REQUIREMENTS Each team is required to submit their project on Agorize no later than 10 am on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening, accepted submissions will be given 2 minutes to pitch their functioning solution in front of the judges followed by a 1 minute Q&A session. Your presentation format is up to you, but it is recommended to share a very brief visual, e.g. PowerPoint or a video combined with a demo of the solution developed. We will provide you with projection equipment. Hackers who can’t attend the closing event in San Francisco will not be eligible for the prizes. WHO OWNS THE IP? Rights will be shared. PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT You will have to sign a participation agreement on the day the Hackathon begins. Both hackers and makers will be required to sign the agreements. JUDGING CRITERIA Depending on which challenge you choose, you might be judged on up to 4 criteria: 1. • Data visualization with Refocus, from Salesforce Open Source

Hi Everyone, We invited two speakers from Salesforce to talk about Refocus, an open source data visualization project. Details are listed below. Speech # 1 Why we built Refocus Abstract: Refocus gives everyone, from frontline engineers to c-level executives, realtime visibility into the health of their products and infrastructure. It uses beautiful visualizations that are tailored to the different users and can be customized to suit different needs. Speaker: Vijay Swamidass Speech #2 Making your own lens with Refocus’ Lens Developer Kit (LDK) Abstract: Refocus (https://github.com/salesforce/refocus) is a platform for visualizing the status of monitored subjects. The platform does not attempt to provide visualizations to satisfy every type of user. Instead, it allows users to install add-on modules, which we call lenses, to provide new visualizations. Each lens provides a new visualization to help users understand their data in a new way. The LDK lets you build and test a lens quickly and iteratively, without having to install it into a running Refocus application. The LDK also provides some dummy data sets and simulates realtime events so you can test how your lens handles hierarchy data and realtime events. Speaker: Ian Goldstein Schedule 6:30 - 7:00pm Social time 7:00 - 8:00pm Talk 8:00 - 8:45pm Social Bio of speakers: Vijay Swamidass is the Director of Site Reliability at Salesforce. He oversees the development of custom monitoring tools for the Infrastructure teams. The custom tools provide immediate insight into service health, amongst thousands of monitoring metrics collected regarding the global data centers. Ian Goldstein is the Lead developer for Refocus, and a Principal Software Engineer at Salesforce. Ian combines his data visualization expertise using d3.js and React with years of monitoring software expertise to add to Refocus’ extensibility. The room limit is 150 people, so RSVP early. Many thanks to Salesforce for providing the venue! Where: The event is held at the Training room in the Rincon Annex. This is a corporate facility so it can be a little confusing to find at first. Follow this guide: Step #1 - The address is at 121 Spear St, San Francisco, CA 94105, so follow your GPS to this general area. Step #2 - Get on Spear or Steuart street, between Mission and Howard, and enter the courtyard as depicted below in the diagram below: Step #3 - The entrance is the door in the photo below. We look forward to seeing you!
