Re: [vizsla-40] boarding and skin allergies?

I have had 2 dogs that've gotten demo.mange--neither broke out in bumps/pustules that scabbed over--it can turn into that when it gets really bad and out of hand--but usually starts with some minor hair loss.  I did have the hives/scabs happen a couple of mine--after running in certain types of weeds/tall grass when we lived in CA.  A friend had the same--but very much related to the season of that particular plant & once it was done--they were ok.  Jeff is right however, get a skin scraping before you jump to any conclusions.  Both allergies and mange are more prevalent when you don't have a strong immune system and it gets to be a viscous circle.  My now 7 y/o got mange--small little patch on his face at about a year of age(his mom did the same thing at the same age)--it's just a stressful time for their bodies.  My vet was sure he had allergies & after much trial and error in food switching....we opted for the allergy panel (blood work) for both food and environmental allergens.  It was pricey--but it was so worth it--the time, energy, wasted $ on wrong foods or whatever.  Do your homework on foods & what dogs need.  There are many great natural foods with grand ingredient lists....much of which is unnecessary for dogs--I've read great labels--that make me want to eat that food--blueberries, cranberries, carrots, all sorts of fruits, vegs, meats, grains.  I've found that the simpler the better for dogs.  I've not looked at labels for about 6 years and I'm sure the market is even more comlicated now--my dogs eat Calif Natural b/c it has about 7 ingredients. (and based on my allergy report--none of the things he's allergic to).  A rule of thumb for foods--monitor the dog's output if you try diet changes--lots of poop means lots of unused/wasted dog food, small amounts of poop mean they're utilizing their food well.  Good Luck!

Hello all- I am hoping I can find someone to give us some advice. With a few summer vacations planned, we need to find a place to board our sweet 7 mo old Vizsla.  Of course- he requires his daily runs so I am hoping to find a place I can trust that won't just keep him in a cage all day and understands the needs of this breed.

Also- he has developed some skin allergies that are interesting. For a while he had bumps all over him when I would take him to areas with tall grass (bull creek, turkey creek, Emma long).  Now the bumps are gone and have scabbed over and his hair is falling out. :(. It's mainly on his back.  I researched a bit online and found it might be a yeast allergy. Anyone else have this problem?  My vet gave me an antibiotic and expensive shampoo but I would like to find the source.

Please email me directly if you have advice- [address removed].

Thanks so much!!
