The MD/DC Volleyball Meetup Group Message Board › Thursday locations.................

Thursday locations.................

Thursdays suffer from a dearth of locations at which to play which are NOT leagues, ie, VOlleyball House, Champions Field House and the Rockville Sportsplex.

That said, we are trying to get Coffield Community Center in Silver Spring, Md. on line to have Thursday night VOLLEYBALL. So far, much resistance and little cooperation.
Regarding Coffield Comm Center, I will attempt to work things out with the Center Director, Derrick Felton, but if that does not work.................I will go to Mr. Gabriel Albornoz and his office to try to effect change in a positive direction for our membership and Volleyballers in Montgomery County.

I would REALLY appreciate hearing back from you guys since I am trying to open this location up for you all. Coffield sits on a site less than 200 feet from a regular Metrobus stop, with a small shelter, even. So, for those who choose to use public transport, this is an easy transfer from either the Silver Spring or Bethesda Metro stations onto a Metrobus (ROUTE number to be provided when this is a GO) and then another bus back to the Metro stations going either East or West.

For those of you members who live on the north and NE sides of DC, there is another gym likely to come on line in middle March. The North Laurel Comm Center actually HAD open gym pick up VB in a great venue........TWO courts of indoor, well lit, high ceilinged splendor..............on Thursday nights from 6-9 PM........BUT no more than two or three players were showing up.

So, they rented out the whole gym to a private group. So, NOW, no Open VB there until the second week in March.

We CAN reclaim this space IF we can motivate a cadre of between 10 and 30 players to show up there and show their interest in playing on a regular basis. Thing is, apparently, VB is not a cheap proposition in Howard County. It is $5 per night to play there unless you get a yearly pass. Still, it IS another indoor, well lit, warm, nicely built gym to play in from October until April every year.

If those of you who live in Howard County, northern PG county and close in Montgomery are willing to show up to play on a Thursday night, we can make inroads there and establish this gym as one of our own.

Upper County Community Center WAS our gym of choice several years ago but attendance dropped off and folks simply stopped going there. At times, we had two courts worth of players.........between 20 and 30 players there. Then, people simply stopped showing up and the group died down. Then again, Upper County is 4 miles from the nearest Metro station so it was cars ONLY.
