We are a local chapter of a family-oriented international walking society (IVV). We have been around for many years and we know how to have a good time. We post a new list of walks every month.  Come join us at one of our upcoming walks.

We are Volkssporters........locally known as The Mossbacks

WHAT ARE VOLKSSPORTS?  (Be sure to see "DISCUSSIONS" for more information)

Volkssports, literally "popular" or "folk" sports, are organized walking, swimming, bicycling, roller skating, and cross-country skiing events providing exercise that contributes to physical fitness.   We mainly walk our scenic routes, but bikers and runners are welcome too.

Volkssporting originated in Germany and is now an international sport involving more than 20 countries. Volkssports started in the USA in 1976 in Fredericksburg, Texas, and in 1979 the American Volkssport Association (AVA) was recognized internationally.

For on the spot information covering the state of Oregon, be sure to stop by the WALK OREGON  web site for information covering all of Oregon and Southwest Washington.   All the Oregon clubs can be found there.

All volkssporting events are non-competitive and are structured to encourage everyone to participate in the physical activity at their own pace. For example, start time for most walking and biking events is usually between 8:00 AM and 12:00 noon. Finish time is usually by 4:00 PM.

Volkssporting includes people of all ages. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Some events are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Dogs on leashes are welcome on most walks.

Walks are the most common and the most popular of the volkssport events. Walks are rated for difficulty from 1 to 5, with a rating of 1 being fairly flat and on paved surfaces. To be a sanctioned event for AVA credit, the walk must be at least 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), but if you are able to only do a portion you are still welcome.

If you want additional information, please contact

Sally at (541) 726-7169 or Richard (541) 953-0140

Richard is an avid walker and knows well the up's and down's and in's and out's of VOLKSSPORTING.  Not only has he contributed many a pair of shoes to this sport, but he is one of the friendliest you'll talk to in our club.

He and Sally are always willing to talk to you about  VOLKSSPORTING.....

We also invite you to join our walking, biking group of MOSSBACKS......

           • For one person it is $15 per year

           • For a family of two or more the rate is $20 per year.....

Please call Cherie at 503-360-3757 for the details on how to join our 25 year old club

and walk with us into the future....
