Butterfly Creek Walk

Fancy a good long Sunday walk (and play in the creek for the fur babies) through native bush in the beautiful East Harbour Regional Park with some breathtaking views over Wellington Harbour?

We'll be walking the Mackenzie Road Track to the Butterfly Creek picnic area and back again.  We will go at our own pace, but indicated timing is 1 hour 45 minutes each way.

This is regarded as a Moderate walk as there is an initial 200 metre zig-zag climb up onto the ridge which will take about 20 minutes or so.  Once we conquer this part, it is a relatively easy walk through the forest along a stream to the picnic area.  We'll hang out in the picnic area for a little while to chill and enjoy the nature, so bring along some food, refreshments, toys, balls, etc.

For those who want a slightly shorter walk back, there is the option to exit via the Kowhai Street Track from Butterfly Creek.  This takes approximately 1 hour.

As with any walk in the NZ outdoors, make sure you are equipped with appropriate footwear, and warm & waterproof clothing, just in case. If the weather is particularly bad, I will send out an email by 8.00am on the morning of the walk advising of cancellation.

For those keen, after we've had our fill of nature, we’ll emerge from the wilderness into Eastbourne Village or Days Bay for a beer, wine, coffee or gelato!

If any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to post a comment or email.

Looking forward to having you join us!

Cheers,

Tania

    HI Tania,
Sorry wont make the walk to day, Pam hurt her back out walking yesterday. So taking it easy. Hope you all have a wonderful walk, lots of doggy stories to talk about. Cheers Chris.

The perfect outing! Play and recharge options all along, for both the dogs and the humans :). Lily even overcame her fear of being in deep water and jumped right in - a great moment! Thanks again to Doug who rescued our two dogs (and the diners) when they walked into the cafe unexpectantly at the end of the walk...
The dogs all got along amazingly well, and Lily found a new best friend in Bosley :). Great meeting some very friendly humans too!

Thank you for organising such a great walk, Bosley and I loved it! Bosley is blissfully sleeping now, probably dreaming about bouncing around in the creek with his new buddies!

Absolutely lovely to spend the day with everyone in such a beautiful place! You guys and your tremendously friendly & charismatic pooches made this a wonderful social event and a really enjoyable day. Thanks for coming along and being part of the fun - 20 humans and 18 dogs was a brilliant turnout :-). A big thank you to Sarah for organising and hosting this one!

Had the most wonderful day, and my dogs even more so. Thanks so much to all of you for making me feel so welcome. I have two furry friends fast asleep on their beds, and a smile on my face. Lovely to meet you all

Superb walk today. Thanks everyone for making it such a fun day. I have achieved the non dog owner smelling like a wet dog look very effectively (Dan, that's your fault I think ;) )

We have headed off on the walk. Those yet to arrive, catch up with us. :-)

This isn't the little dog walking group so we expect dogs of all sizes. The last walk I had the littlest one and I wasn't concerned at all with her getting squished. She runs fast and if she gets concerned she comes running to me. Her usual behavior though is to ignore them all as if they don't exist.

Hey Barbara, I've not walked this particular track myself, so not sure of the layout at the entrance. Sarah, one of our Event Hosts does this walk often with her springer spaniels so I'll check with her and we'll come back to you. :-)

The entrance way is between 145 & 147 Muritai road. There is an alleyway where we can meet up before we head up the track. if you go on google earth and type in the address, it is by the white hall. Opposite the corner shops.

Can I just say how absolutely chuffed I am to belong to such a wonderfully supportive, welcoming and good-natured group! Thank you for all your comments and words of encouragement for those who are new to the group. It can be a bit daunting getting out and about in new places and doing stuff, particularly if you are on your own. But that's exactly what groups like ours are for and, as far as I'm concerned, no Walkies! Dog Lover stands alone. :-) I'm really looking forward to meeting all our new (and not-so-new) members on Sunday. I also know for a fact that my co-organiser Jason (who is without dog) will be a very happy man if there is a surplus dog or two for him to adopt for the day. Now Jason is a tall, strong, broad-shouldered bloke and the bigger the dog, the better! I'm thinking Kujo the White German Shepherd might be a suitable playmate for our Jason. :-)

And what a wonder group you and Jason run Tania. Credit to you both as I have been overwhelmed with the support from members in here, and that's even before I met them. Look like I will be making some new friends and I look forward to a little company from time to time :) - Well done

Hey everyone. Goodness, what wonderful supportive and lovely messages I have received. I thank each of you so very much for making a very shy and unconfident girl feel so welcome - terrible two included hehe. Because of this kindness, I have managed to build up the confidence to come along tomorrow with both my furry mates and just see how they go. As mentioned, I will get them to a park first to burn off a little energy and then join you all and your fur babies for the walk. I wish I wasn't such an unconfident person but this is why I have joined a few groups on here - the work on that. Once again thank you for the kindness shown. See you all tomorrow (you won't be able to miss us lol)

This event is a very good idea. My husband and I are a bit starved of good company that we can enjoy with our GSPs. Everyone loves them, but not everyone can keep up with them? Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday - or at least some of you!

Oh come along just think what your dogs will be missing out on all that fun of playing with other 4 legged friends, and you will not be upsetting us at all.

    1 · October 4, 2013

I would very much love to join this walk with my two dogs however am very nervous about bringing them as they can be very vocal and full on when first meeting others dogs. They are both large, and play so wonderfully with all dogs they meet, but most dog owners run a mile from me and my two by how they behave on the lead leading up to meeting :( - I would love to make some new friends and have some great social time for my furry mates. Just so so nervous about how I (we) will be recieved

    2 · October 3, 2013

Ours get ridiculously excited about anything new...it doesn't last long and restraining them on their leads often makes things worse! Looking forward to meeting you :-) we're all dog lovers, so very accommodating of canine craziness!

Vanna is vocal when first meeting other dogs but calms down after first greeting. Looking forward to meeting other dogs

      October 4, 2013

  • Katiepie

Oh dear - I certainly don't want to upset anyone by coming along. If you knew my situation you would understand why my dogs are so full on. But if it makes anyone feel uncomfortable me bringing my two large dogs who don't meet and great quietly then perhaps I might have to just stick to walks on our own in the local park. Gets awful lonely sometimes. Never planned to have two big dogs on my own - but this is how I have ended up by default. Not sure I have the confidence to come along and I just know my two can be a little overwhelming to begin with.

Sorry folks - think I'm going to bail. Thanks for the advice and info. Hope its a wonderful walk for you all. I'll be hanging with my two down by the river just the 3 of us.

    October 3, 2013

    • Jason P

I'm with the others on this. I don't think anyone's uncomfortable and there's a few of us without dogs coming for the fun so some spare hands to help out if that's of any assistance. Come along :)

      2 · October 4, 2013

    • Rachel

Hi Katie. Get in touch if you want to go down river tonight or tomorrow I messaged my number. I'm about with my pooch.

      October 4, 2013

  • Barbara P.

I definitely agree that those bigger dogs (mine included) are actually much better when they can meet and greet other dogs off lead rather than trying to hold them back on the lead (and getting all tangled up too ;-). Is there a grassy area near the entrance of the track away from busy roads where they can all sniff each other out and sort things between them?

    1 · October 3, 2013

  • Julia

Crumbs - it certainly sounds like it'll be a full on meet and greet. Most dogs are a lot less aggressive when they're off the leash, as they don't feel trapped. I expect there'll be some raised ruffs and a bit of posturing while they sort out their dominance order!

    1 · October 3, 2013

  • Jo

Hi Katie. I am in Upper Hutt. We could meet up and go for a walk along the river and let the dogs have a run. Maybe if they know dogs before the walk they might not be as over the top excitable. I had planned on taking mine out tonight but not sure if the weather is going to play nice.

    1 · October 3, 2013

    • Katiepie

Hi there Jo. A very kind offer, thank you. I will be taking my two to the park first anyway so they can run off just a little of their insane car excitement as I live out country and don't get them out in the car until weekends. I plan to go to Whakatiki park around 9am either way so let me know if you would like to be the brave one to meet my two first hehe

      October 3, 2013

    • Rachel

I may be able to meet you at nine, with my boy. I will let you know.

      October 3, 2013

  • Jo

I have a question...how wide is the track? I am just thinking that if dogs run back to check on their owners etc at times and the track is narrow...

    October 3, 2013

  • Sarah

Just to add, ....when you are driving to Eastbourne the entrance to the walk is directly opposite the central shops, so it is a little easier to park a little north of them on Muritai Road and the park at the shops in 60mins or something like that. there is plenty of residential parking though...

Hi, am am back and maybe have some time to join you this Sunday with Lily. Just wondering if dogs can go off lead on this walk?

    1 · September 30, 2013

    • Tania S

Hi Barbara, welcome back! Yes, Lily can be off lead. :-)

      1 · September 30, 2013

    • Sarah

Yes, this is an off lead walk, but there are poison stations in the bush so you're best to keep them on the path
