CIRCULAR Β£5 WALK: FAIRLOP WATERS and COUNTRY PARK

Details
FAIRLOP WATERS COUNTRY PARK - LAKE, MEADOWS, WOODLAND TRAILS, followed by socialising with cheap food and drinks in a convivial atmosphere at the New Fairlop Oak Pub.
Within this very much leisure focussed country park in East London, we take a circular walk along its tidy paths which exhibit the stark contrasts of the manicured lawns of the golf course against the dramatic boulder park and the wild backdrop of the country park and lakes, all of which are contained within a large area which was once famed for its magnificent Great Fairlop Oak. Fairlop Waters Country Park covers an area of 120 hectares (300 acres), has a wide diversity of habitats including lakes and ponds, woodland and grasslands, and the UK's largest man made boulder park.
History: The whole Fairlop area was originally part of the historic Hainault Forest. In the 1750's an open air fair was established around the mighty Fairlop Oak tree and each season over 100,000 people would attend the Fair from all over London. The mighty Fairlop Oak tree was rather abused and by 1805 became hollow at ground level. People would often picnic inside the tree and light fires. One such fire set the tree alight and it burnt for 24 hours. Gales in February 1820 finally brought "Fairlop" crashing down.
Much more recently the area served as an RAF airfield in both world wars and then became gravel pits before being returned to nature.
