Now open for RSVPs. It is 6 miles of incredible beautiful views going West from the Palace of Fine Arts. When we did this walk before we walked to the Cliff House and then up to our last destination, the beautiful Sutro Heights. Now for the first time we will replace the Cliff House with the nearby new visitors center called "Lands End Lookout." That will shorten our walk and give us about 15 extra minutes. Also, it is closer to Sutro Heights.
The only cost is $2 cash for adults and kids free. We will stay on the "Coastal Trail" all the way to the new "Lands End Lookout." One should bring a sack lunch and it would also be good to bring water and paper towels. The Coastal Trail in SF has been renovated massively lately such as cutting down an entire forest and planting native species.
We will meet at 11:30 AM on the grass at the corner of Baker St & Bay St, the South-East corner of the Palace of Fine Arts. I used to bring blue colored balloons for people to find us, but I now think we are easy to spot. We look like a group of walkers: walking shoes, small back packs, and some of us even wear hats. We will probably be wearing white name tags. I am tall and plan to be wearing a green hat for this event and to have clipboards for people to print their names on.
At about 11:45 PM we will start walking North on the East side of the pond to get to the big restrooms at the Palace of Fine Arts. Then about Noon, we will start walking through Crissy Field following the trail near the coast towards the Golden Gate Bridge. To avoid a possible huge line at the women's restroom in the bridge's view area we will use the restrooms near Fort Point before going to the bridge. Late people may try and meet us at the bridge view area about 1:30 PM.
About 1:40 PM we will leave the bridge and continue our walk on the "Coastal Trail." We plan to eat our sack lunches at a bunker/battery on the trail about 1:50 PM. Then we continue walking to the new Visitor Center. Then we will walk to the top of Sutro Heights. Estimated walk ending time is 5:00 PM. Most of us will take the 38 bus heading towards downtown SF. Do bring kids and cameras, but please don't bring dogs or other animals.
Below is a trip planner that will show you how to get around the Bay Area on public transportation. However one cannot count on buses to be on time: http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/mtc/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en
All photos below are in the order of what we will see on the walk.
There is a police vs. gangsters movie from the 1950s called "The Lineup" that was filmed on location in SF including near the Cliff House & inside the Sutro Baths that burned down in 1966. Below is a link to watch that movie for free:
