Moving clockwise\, the route keeps to the outer edge of the reserve\, giving long views over rolling s and ridges\, patches of scrub\, and the quiet expanse of Kenfig Pool off t o the left. The terrain stays mostly flat as the path curves south and the n west\, skirting the margins of the dune system before rising gently towa rd the higher ground near the castle ruins. From here the loop bends north \, crossing open stretches of grassed sand and low undulations before retu rning to the car park. It’s a steady\, atmospheric circuit with big skie s\, shifting light\, and the sense of walking the boundary of a landscape shaped by wind and water.\n\nI will be booking a table at the most haunted pub in Wales\, The Prince of Wales in Kenfig after the walk. I will make a separate event for those that with to join us. The table is booked for 1 4:30 (last sitting) that is why we are starting a bit earlier.\n\nI will p ut a short history of the castle lake and pub below for anyone interested. \n\nKenfig Castle\nKenfig Castle began as a Norman frontier fortress\, bui lt by Robert of Gloucester to secure the newly planted borough on the Glam organ coast. For centuries it endured revolt\, fire\, and siege\, yet the enemy that finally defeated it was not men but the land itself. As storms shifted and the Kenfig Burrows crept inland\, the ditch filled\, the walls sank\, and the keep was slowly smothered. Some say this was the fulfilmen t of a curse\; others claim the castle’s lord ignored a supernatural war ning\; but the most unsettling explanation is simply that nature moved inc h by inch until even stone could not stand.\n\nKenfig Pool\nKenfig Pool is the still water that watched the town rise and vanish. It is here that th e Lady of the Pool is said to have appeared\, offering a prophecy the town sfolk refused to believe: that the sands were coming\, that the church mus t be moved\, that the borough must flee. Whether her warning was mercy ign ored or whether the town was already doomed by a forgotten injustice\, the pool remained unchanged as the dunes advanced. Its calm surface makes the later ruin of the castle feel inevitable — a quiet witness to a slow di saster.\n\nThe Buried Town\nBeneath the dunes lies the medieval borough of Kenfig: market square\, burgage plots\, church site\, and street grid\, a ll swallowed over centuries by drifting sand. The town was once a thriving coastal settlement with a harbour\, guildhall\, and busy trade routes\, b ut the advancing dunes forced families to abandon their homes one by one. Whether this erasure was driven by a curse\, a warning ignored\, or the re lentless force of nature\, the result is the same — a whole community bu ried out of sight\, leaving only fragments at the edges to hint at what wa s lost.\n\nPrince of Wales Inn\nThe Prince of Wales Inn is the last surviv ing building of old Kenfig\, originally raised as the new town hall after the medieval borough was abandoned to the dunes. Its upstairs room once he ld the courts leet\, the portreeve’s bench\, and inquests for shipwrecke d sailors brought in from the coast\; its lower rooms served as schoolhous e\, meeting place\, and\, when needed\, mortuary. Today it stands alone on solid ground while the rest of Kenfig lies buried\, giving the inn an unc anny sense of being the town’s final memory.
