Last Minute Patuxent Paddle

We will launch at 11am at the Patuxent Wetlands Park where the Patuxent River goes under Rt. 4. We will paddle a few hours upstream and then back. Total expected distance between 10 and 12 miles spanning 4 hours on the water (plus a break when we turn around). I know this is a weekday paddle but it is going to be very nice and if you able and are prepared for a winter paddle, come on down.

Website for the launch site: http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/launch/patuxent_wetlands.cfm

Been a lot of talk about coming up with a minimum list of equipment for a cold water winter paddle. A full list will be coming out as soon as we have a final version. Right now we want to stress that one should have safety equipment like PFD, Skirt, Pump, Paddle Float, etc. The real tricky part is what to wear. You must be dressed for the water and not for the air. Right now that means: 1) dry suit, 2) dry top and dry bottom, 3) full 3-mil or greater wetsuit, or 4) 3-mil or greater Farmer John/Jane wetsuit with either dry top or wetsuit jacket. Dry suits and drytop/drybottom should have appropriate layers underneath. If you do not appear to have the right clothing when you show up, the organizer (that's me for this one) has the right to ask you to not participate so if you have any doubts, drop me a line so we can talk about it and make sure you are ready. Bring a change of clothes to keep on your kayak, water, and some snacks.

Some of us are planning on going out to eat afterwards.

It will be a low tide paddle so SUPs are not going to work so this is a kayak-only paddle. The pace should be very moderate (this is not going to be a fast paddle).

No thanks needed to me. I just posted the outing, it was your excellent idea so thank you.

It really is a idyllic as Darrick says. This was a great paddle even with low tide. I am looking forward to doing it again some time when it is high tide. Also I hope we get a chance to go the other directions sometime.

Can I borrow dry top from someone?

I do not have a dry top. I do have a couple of wetsuit jackets I can bring along if you have a Farmer Jane. If just a dry bottom you will need a dry top. Darrick has one but I do not know if he will get this in time to bring it along.

Don't miss this one. You're in for a special treat afterwards if you have never eaten at Pirates Cove or Thursdays.

Is it enough to wear 3 mil wet suit or farmer john/jane with the water well below 40C?

I wouldn't any longer but as long as someone has experience with that equipment at these temps and swim tested their gear, it is their call. I have been swimming in 38 degree with a Farmer John and Wetsuit Jacket for 15 minutes and then paddled for 3 hours with no issues (but that was when I was 15 pounds heavier). In truth, a lot of folks think just wearing a dry suit is good enough but it can be worse if they do not have enough underneath so it is risky this time of year no matter what you wear. In addition this is a VERY safe paddle: I would not really be comfortable with anyone with that combination on a river crossing for instance.
