2013 KAYAKING STATE GAMES - Maryland Special Olympics - Volunteers Needed!

**** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT UPDATE (see below) ****

THANKS FOR VOLUNTEERING! - RSVPs & Registrations at MDSO are now closed, ... 'due to overwhelming responses from the kayaking community'! :)

This is truly a great cause to participate!

Your kayaking skills are needed to support the Kayak Race Competition for the 2013 Kayaking State Games - Maryland

• When: Saturday, October 5, 2013

• Time: 8am-4pm

• Where: Piney Run State Park (Sykesville, MD) - Free entry

In fact, one of the kayak competitors, George Radebaugh with CPA's Pirates of Baltimore (PoBs), won Bronze last year will be racing again this year.  George has been training all summer, and he's even got a longer kayak.  After paddling with him at two other events this summer, I'm betting that he's got a solid chance to win Gold this year.  :)

So he hopes that some of you may cheer him towards the finish line; ...  and hopefully 'Winners Podium'.  The PoBs will be cheering him on,  but the other athletes as well.  They and the MDSO organizers would welcome you either as a volunteer or supporter.  So please sign UP and support the MD Special Olympics in any way that you can! :)

To register, please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/kayakingvolunteer

The following details below were kindly provided by'Karen' at WKC. Note: You can also volunteer 'off-water', too.

-------------------------------------------------------

"Volunteers are needed from 8am until 4pm*. *Due to the nature of the event we cannot offer a half shift. Volunteers must be able to commit from 8am until 4pm. (However, if you need to leave early, we're not going to force you to stay.)

Volunteers are needed - both with and without kayaking experience - to assist on the water and on land. We'll utilize on-water assistants, kayaking stagers/organizers, Athlete staging, timers, and other positions essential to a quality competition.

We'll provide you with a sweet T-shirt and lunch. (I'd recommend bringing snacks and/or your own lunch, as it's usually a sandwich, apple, cookie and/or chips, and a bottle of water.)

Please register to volunteer at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/kayakingvolunteer

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email our Volunteer Coordinator, Ashley Newnan, at [masked]."

-------------------------------------------------------

Special Note 2 (from MDSO Organizer):  "Due to overwhelming volunteer support, we have exceeded our volunteer numbers (Go Volunteers!!) and closed volunteer registration.  If you are receiving this email, you are confirmed to volunteer.  We will not be accepting any additional volunteers from this point forward."  - Ashley Newnan

Special Note: If you plan to include a 'Guest', please notify me beforehand for approval, if they also seek to provide kayak support.  All 'Guests' who participate in any WKC event must comply and abide by the same requirements, as all WKC members.

Great Meetup, DJ. Thanks for posting it. It was an honor to be able to help out. And I'm glad we did not need to do any rescues of rec boats!

Marc..... "Probably not too many more, if any.

Assisting athletes with staying in their lanes at the starting line, guiding them to the starting line (and back to the dock), and being extra eyes on the water."

I've signed up. Do we need to bring a kayak to the event?

Thanks for volunteering Carol! It is my understanding that each kayak volunteer and competitor must bring in their own kayak & equipment. I'll try to confirm with organizers, unless someone here at WKC is aware that the park offers rentals

I understand that they also need volunteers on land.
