Launch from the new Jones Point Parking lot off of their floating dock (don't worry, I have experience getting folks in and out of kayaks from floating docks). We will paddle across to National Harbor. From there we will paddle upstream exploring the 2 coves on the MD/DC side across from Old Town Alexandria (including Oxon Creek). We will then cross back over to paddle along Old Town returning to Jones Point.
This is a paddle that can accomodate a number of paces and types of kayaks (and SUP). Shooting for a "moderate" pace so larger Recreational kayaks (i.e., in the 12' to 14' range) would be perfectly appropriate. Folks with longer boats can split off and cover more territory if they wish (such as go downstream from National Harbor a bit before catching any slower boats that will go directly upstream). In truth, we will never really be out of sight of the Wilson Bridge where out launch spot is so not too much chance of getting lost.
Hoping folks will want to catch a bite to eat in Old Town afterwards so if this is in your wish list as well, bring a change of clothes (always best in the winter just in case regardless).
Should be a nice day (air temps are supposed to be in the mid-50's with water temps in the mid-40's). I know it will be warm (at least air temp) but remember the water is still really cold so wetsuits or drysuits please (NO COTTON). As always folks are responsible for their own safety but dressing inadequately still puts not only the paddler in jeopardy but the entire group as well so please keep that in mind.
To get directions, I have included the Park Service link: http://www.nps.gov/gwmp/planyourvisit/jonespoint.htm
I would like to start launching by 11:30am (might take a little while a few at a time off of the dock) so that we are off the water no later than 3 (and we can beat the rush in Old Town for dinner).
