CSS Basics (2-class series)

  • Jan 22, 2014 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

CSS is HTML's other half and the way we style web sites. If HTML is the frame if your house, CSS is the paint, curtains, light fixtures, etc.

In this two-class series, we'll guide you through everything you need to know to start bringing your site design to life. We'll begin by explaining the three methods of connecting CSS to your HTML, explaining when and where you'll use each.

Then, we'll introduce you to the CSS style properties that will let you control everything from font size to padding, margins to background images---you name it.

Pre-requisite: Experience with HTML and basic web site publishing.

NB: This course is the essential precursor to our CSS: Positioning & Layouts class and a prerequisite for many other classes we teach.

Wednesdays @ 6:30-8:30pm (Doors open at 6:00pm to get a good seat and get set up)

Class 1 - January 22nd: The why and how of applying styles

Class 2 - January 29th: Colors, typography, borders, margins, padding, etc.

All the notes for the course will be available online for you to use during and after the class.

We're meeting in the room labeled Singapore.

The total cost for the course (both classes) is $50.

You'll pay a $5 deposit when you RSVP via; because we have limited space, this is to save your spot in the class.

Then, the remaining $45 will be paid at the first class. We accept cash or PayPal.

+1 Young adult discount (girls 16 and under): half-pints are half-off if they're attending with you (shrinking the gap starts early, folks).

Ugh, hope it's nothing serious at the dentist. Thanks for the heads up! =)

Hi all, just wanted to confirm that the class is on for tonight. For those driving, the parking ban was lifted this morning. See you all soon! =)

If the class doesn't get snowed out, I'm happy to help out as a TA again.

Cool! As of right now the class is still on, but we'll see how the day goes / when they lift the snow emergency in Cambridge. I'll comment again later today to say for sure.

I think that was the 4 class CSS Layout & Positioning class that was on Tuesdays. Which brings up the question - could we skip right to that class after HTML or do we really need the CSS basics?

      1 · January 17, 2014

    • Nicole N.

Hey Amanda, Jen's right--the CSS layouts class is on Tuesdays, but this class is on Wednesdays. I'll email you with some options.

Re the order question: you'll definitely want to take CSS Basics before tackling the layouts class. Basics introduces you to CSS and how it works. Layouts is designed for those who have a familiarity with CSS and it jumps right in to using it to layout pages and position elements on the page.
