CSS Basics (2-class series)

  • Mar 18, 2014 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

CSS is HTML's other half and the way we style web sites. If HTML is the frame if your house, CSS is the paint, curtains, light fixtures, etc.

In this two-class series, we'll guide you through everything you need to know to start bringing your site design to life. We'll begin by explaining the three methods of connecting CSS to your HTML, explaining when and where you'll use each.

Then, we'll introduce you to the CSS style properties that will let you control everything from font size to padding, margins to background images---you name it.

Pre-requisite: Experience with HTML and basic web site publishing.

NB: This course is the essential precursor to our CSS: Positioning & Layouts class and a prerequisite for many other classes we teach.

Tuesdays @ 6:30-8:30pm

Doors open at 6:00pm; we encourage you to arrive by 6:15pm to get a good seat and get set up. Class will begin promptly at 6:30pm.

Class 1 - March 18th: The why and how of applying styles

Class 2 - March 25th: Colors, typography, borders, margins, padding, etc.

All the notes for the course will be available online for you to use during and after the class.

Cambridge Innovation Center

1 Broadway, Cambridge, MA

Cambridge, MA 02142

Street parking is available (though usually sparse) on Broadway St., Third St., and Main St.

Please bring photo ID. Upon entering 1 Broadway you'll check in with security. Tell them you're visiting the 14th floor.

Once you depart the elevator, turn left and walk down the hallway until you get to the locked glass door. If one of us is not there waiting to open the door, call Nicole @ [masked] and we'll come let you in.

We're meeting in the room labeled Charles.

The cost for the course is $50, which covers both classes.

You'll pay when you RSVP via

> 7 days before the first class: full refund

3 - 6 days before the first class: full credit toward a future class. Credit doesn’t expire; just email us when you see a course you want to take on the schedule and we’ll get you set up.

No refund or credit is available if you cancel two or fewer days prior to the first class. We have limited space and late cancellations prevent other members from participating. However, we record all class sessions and detailed notes are available online. If you need to cancel on short notice, email us to get access to the materials.

+1 Young adult discount (girls 16 and under): half-pints are half-off if they're attending with you (shrinking the gap starts early, folks). Email us to add a young +1 to your RSVP.

Oops, did I leave my Mac power supply in the classroom by the window?

Yes! We left it with the concierge desk on the 14th floor at the CIC with a note saying that it was found in Charles after the class. They should be there until about 5pm today.

BYO-computer? Never been to the CIC before...

Hi Cassandra, you should bring your own computer if you want to follow along with examples. Not everyone brings a laptop, which is totally fine; some people learn better by taking notes and then practicing at home. If you opt not to bring a laptop, you'll be able to team up with another class member to work on exercises. More info about what to expect here:
