Make the Transition: Traditional Design to the Web

Are you a traditional designer or design student and are looking to jump start your path to working with the web? We will have a presentation from designers who are experienced in doing just that. Join us to learn how to design for the web, when your background had been in the traditional print format.

Mark Fairbanks (@MarkFairbanks) - Translator

Mark is the cofounder of Translator, an ideation lab and experience design firm.

Along with Cindi Thomas, he helps lead design thinking, brand strategy development and creative execution for both established companies and start-ups alike. He is also a cofounder of two other startups through the Translator Lab program: Shindig, the first crowd-powered event booking platform, and Meet•Meme, the first social media trading card.

His presentation "Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable" traces his transition from a veteran of traditional advertising/design agencies to embracing digital technology platforms and the connection economy.

Irina Becker (@IrinaBecker) - Creatage, Inc.

Irina is Senior Art Director at a marketing agency, Creatage. She focuses on the conception and design of high end websites, rich internet applications, banners and direct mail.

Irina Becker will talk about what you need to know when transitioning from print to web, and will also share a few tips and resources she finds helpful.

    Life stories about their job path were not what I expected. Guess I was looking for MORE hardcore facts: how I changed my focus, how I improved my skills sets, resources I used to convert my "print style" to "web style"... kind of like that. The 2nd presenter just read off her slides. While it looked like she put time into preparing her "slide show", it would've been more valuable if she'd focused more on "talking" to us about "WHY" her topics were important. For example, Text Contrast: isn't that just important in print as on websites? Or is there a difference? Well, just my opinion.
