Night Hike: Cerro San Luis

Join us for a night hike to the summit of Cerro San Luis. Winter evening access permits are required for this hike. You can get a free permit through the city of San Luis Obispo. (Please do not complete your RSVP with Weekend Hikers for this event until you have secured your permit with the city of SLO.) Permits are limited, so don't delay. You cannot attend this hike without a permit.
We will have a short break at the top of Cerro San Luis, so you mightr want to bring a hot or cold beverage to sip on and a snack or light dinner to nibble on while we gaze at the stars and city lights under the Christmas tree.
To get a permit, complete the following:
- Go to the SLO city website and click on "Reserve your permit": https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/parks-and-recreation/ranger-service/winter-evening-access
- Once on the website, click on "Enroll Now" to sign in or create a new account
- Select the date Thursday, December 11, 2025 for your permit, and complete the enrollment steps online.
- Save your permit to your phone or print and bring it with you to show to the rangers when we leave the trail at the end of the night.
Hike information:
- Pace: moderate
- Terrain: dirt trail that is rocky and rugged
- Duration: about 3 hours
- Distance: 4 miles, about 1100’ elevation gain
- Dogs: Allowed, if leashed 🐾
- 🥾Boots on the trail at 5pm, so please arrive early to find parking.
- ⚠️ Rain cancels this hike.
Bring
- Flashlight or headlamp: REQUIRED. This hike takes place after sunset.
- Snack, light dinner and/or a beverage for the break at the top
- Layers, hat, gloves, etc.
- Hiking poles, optional
