SUMMARY:"Phantom of the Paradise" Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Weird Movie Club Twin Cities\n"Phantom of the Paradise" (1974\
 , 91 min.) is a colorful\, campy\, bombastic rock musical in the "Tommy" /
"Rocky Horror Picture Show" vein. It was written and directed by Brian de
Palma but is quite unlike the rest of his films.\n\nI'll get to the libra
ry around 1:30 p.m. and try to set everything up in time for a 2 p.m. star
 t. Get there early so you don't miss a minute. The library closes at 5\, s
o we'll have to wrap up discussion before then. Discussions tend to last n
o more than about half an hour.\n\nIt's all free. We'll be in the Andy Bos
s Community Room on the 4th floor of the George Latimer Public Library in
downtown St. Paul.\n\nStreet parking is possible\, but you might consider
using the light rail. A great place to park and ride is the Western Avenue
stop of the Green Line. There's always parking on Aurora Avenue\, one str
eet south of University. If you're willing to pay $15\, the parking lot fo
r the Science Museum is close by and always has spots.\n\nAnd feel free to
sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. It would be
great if you wanted to host and lead discussion too. You can go by the off
icial list from the website 366 Weird Movies ([366 Weird Movies + Apocryph

SUMMARY:"The City of Lost Children" Discussion: Watch it at Home First
DESCRIPTION:Weird Movie Club Twin Cities\nIn "The City of Lost Children" (
1995\, 112 min.)\, French filmmakers Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet crea
te an especially dark but somewhat cartoony fairy-tale world that is too d
isturbing for most kids. It's a style that was revolutionary in the 1990s
but might seem more familiar in this world of comic-book movies.\n\nWatch
"The City of Lost Children" on your own and come ready to chat about it. A
s of this writing\, it doesn't look to be free anywhere but you can rent i
t: [One Cut of the Dead streaming: where to watch online?](https://www.jus
twatch.com/us/movie/one-cut-of-the-dead). If it proves to be available now
here\, we will figure something out and keep you posted.\n\nWe'll meet at
Pryes Brewing\, which has lots of space and isn't very noisy. It's near do
wntown Minneapolis but has plenty of parking. I'll get there around 6:30 p
.m. and try to claim a table on the opposite side of the bar. Get a drink
and then head to the other end of the building\, to one of the long tables
near the risers. It's quietest there and there will hopefully be a long t
able free (though we might have to move around at least once to find enoug
h space). You'll be able to identify me by my black baseball cap that says
"Weird Movie Club" on it. I'll post in this event listing if we end up so
mewhere else in the building.\n\nAnd feel free to sitemail me to recommend
another movie for a future meeting. You can go by the official list from

SUMMARY:“It’s Such a Beautiful Day” and “Cat Soup” Screening and
  Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Weird Movie Club Twin Cities\n“It’s Such a Beautiful Day"
(2012\, 62 min.) and "Cat Soup" (2001\, 34 min.) are two heartbreaking ach
ievements in animation. I'm not sure that there's a lot else connecting th
em\, besides both being strange (of course)\, rather understated in tone\,
and willing to go to some dark places. One of them will make me cry for s
ure -- see if you can guess which.\n\nI'll get to the library around 1:30
p.m. and try to set everything up in time for a 2 p.m. start. Get there ea
