Lightning Talks

This first meeting for the year will be a series of lightning talks which we're currently in the process of finalising. We have spots for a couple more for if you have something you want to show off, maybe resulting from Railscamp, etc... please contact either Nahum or Matt about this.

At the beginning of the meeting we'll have time for announcements from business looking for staff, people looking for work and newly released products, libraries etc...

Optimal Workshop is our main sponsor for the night who are not only making their office available but are covering drinks and pizza. Additionally Enspiral are lending us their projector for the evening. Thanks guys!

I feel myself terrible. I read again the conversation here, and Nahum thanks for your comment and sorry I haven't got your direct message. I just wanted to say, that it was really great to see, who vibrant the Ruby community here in Wellington.

Megan, please accept my apology. Sorry for my poor english and I guess, you understand why is ruby is my first and main language. :)

Thank you for the apology Zoltan. Sorry if it seemed like a big deal over such a small thing but those small things can be hugely discouraging in such a male dominated space.

Oh sorry, I just now realised what I've done. Sorry, sorry. I meant Folks. :) English is not my first language and for me Lads means everybody... but I learned my lesson. So Thanks again Ladies and Gentlemen. Really sorry. Hope we can meet soon again and learn more. :) Have a great day!

Regarding the comment made here by Zoltan which Megan responded to. Last Friday I messaged Zoltan directly expressing my concern and seeking a public apology. Disappointingly I've not seen a response.

I believe that in our society, and thus here, it goes without saying that discrimination of any form is not tolerated. Unfortunately blips like this occur, so it's also important how we handle them. I'd hoped that Zoltan had simply culturally misstepped, but since I've not heard back I don't know.

Megan please accept my apologies for this. Please don't view his comment as a reflection on the rest of the community. I really enjoyed your presentation and am looking forward to the next time.

Here's my slides from my talk, though I'm wondering if people even want them since only the "lads" were thanked. http://megahbite.github.io/turbolinks-talk/

Thanks Lads, it was really amazing and I learned a lot. It is fantastic to see how active the ruby community here in Wellington as well. And thanks for the brilliant host. :)

Ahghgh - I've double booked myself for tonight :( - more space for someone else though.

Just noticed the event. Looks like a small venue with limited seats. a bigger venue would be good next time :D

    March 19, 2014

    • Nahum

Yeah, it's real had to find good venues. This is the first meeting of any type at this venue so it's a bit of an experiment to how many people we can fit. We'll have a better idea of max numbers after tonight.

      March 20, 2014

    • Nahum

But its worth mentioning that over the last few years we normally have 10-20 people attending meetings - meaning the venue should be ample unless the numbers change.

      March 20, 2014

  • Nahum

We've still got a couple of presentation slots open for this meeting. Things I think that would be interesting to Rails devs is the new Atom.io text editor and Docker. Just for 5-10 minutes.

Additionally, now that those who were at NZ Railscamp #4 are back, do any of you want to show what you were hacking on? If you didn't manage to RSVP, presenting means you get to come along :-)

For those that are interested in docker, there's a new meetup on that as well http://www.meetup.com...

      March 19, 2014

    • Nahum

I'm hoping somenoe, maybe yourself or someone else from that group, could give us an intro to Docker at a future wellrailed meeting

    Nice topic's!

    March 18, 2014

  • Nahum

I've just updated the description to include the talks that we have lined up.

Also, if managed to nab a spot before it *sold out* but now can't make it, please update your RSVP as we have a waiting list of 11 people.

    See you on Thursday!

It was quite interesting hearing the conversation about DCI from Eoin Kelly. I'd love to see some implementation examples. Sebastian Edwards I'm looking at you.
