Tahoe Flume Trail(Mt. Rose to Spooner Lake)

  • Jun 2, 2013 · 4:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

TRT and Flume here we come...

Hey everyone, it's on!  We're going to Tahoe in June (of course the date is subject to change this early out) However I will let everyone know way in advance if/when it does change.

The plan for now is to meet in San Jose for carpools up to the Spooner Lake area of Nevada, near Lake Tahoe.  From there we'll shuttle to the top of Mt. Rose ($20.00 per person) and ride down from there.  This ride is long and at elevation so make sure you're putting in your base work now if you intend to join us.  Unfortunately due to the length and nature of this ride I will be restricting this ride to experience (Intermediate/Advanced) riders only.  The trails are a wide mix of many different terrain and should offer something for everyone that joins us.

This will be my first time to Tahoe so I'm super stoked, of course that means I'm also clueless as to what to expect.  All I can say is that you should all expect one hell of an Awesome time!  It's going to be a day trip so pack accordingly, spare clothes extra food etc.  We'll eat and rest a little at the end of the day before heading back so we'll be home rather late for a mountain bike ride.

More information, including a map of the route I'm planning and some elevation profiles etc. will be up soon.

The corrected elevation gain on Garmin site was 4,400 feet at around 8,000 feet elevation. No wonder why I am so beat today! Here is the link if anybody is interested.

I'm confused, looking at the profile of our climbing 2900 feet looks about right, but my Garmin (in Training Center) also came up with 24 miles and 4455 feet. Which is right? I had 2800 before I downloaded my 705 GPS. I've never had such a discrepancy before.

      June 4, 2013

    • Vinh P.

2900 ft is according to GPS device assuming that it was properly calibrated to 0 at sea level. 4400 ft is according to topographical data from web service of area.

Looks like it was a blast!!!!

    1 · June 3, 2013

    • David

Oh man Mark, you have no idea... That trail was on a whole different level. It was like all the things I love about riding rolled into one. The soil was loose enough that the tires could really bite. The berms weren't blown out. Heck even the braking bumps were more like braking makers at a race course (nice and even and far enough out to get set up into the corner) I can't wait to go again.

How about shuttling CD next time?

      June 3, 2013

  • Armando

That Chinese downhill to finish up the ride was an awesome surprise. Would you consider that a "Black Diamond trail?" Because it had everything, Flow, speed, jumps, drops, berms and quite technical is sections.

David, I did not know you are such a rebel! BTW, if you didn't stop they would not be flying past you.

LOL, I like your thinking there Vinh. We did stop a bit prematurely didn't we. The end was just past those rocks.

Hey just a reminder to everyone. If you brought guests that had a good time please encourage them to join the group. We had a really good group yesterday and I would love to see Steve, Joe and Brian ride with us again soon. Also if you haven't submitted a group review yet I would appreciate that very much. Spread the word that San Jose Mtb is awesome!

Looks like I have to back out of this one. Have fun everyone!

    May 29, 2013

alright folks we have a major snag thanks to some misinformation from our shuttle buddies. TRT is snow packed still and should be pretty hard to ride for at least a couple more weeks. I do have an alternative plan, however it means we have to earn our decents. here's the ride description from flume trail bikes.
    http://www.flumetrailtahoe.com/flume_trail_description.html

I'll understand if people aren't into this ride and want to wait until later this year when we can do my more downhill route... to be fair though here's the garmin track for the original ride so you have a idea of the ascent involved there as well. this ride may not be too bad if we take it nice and easy.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/256672480

The map doesn't show for some reason but the stats are all there.

David, where do we meet on Sunday at 4am?

      May 29, 2013

  • Els

Does anyone have a spot for me from SF?

    May 28, 2013

  • Rick

Gotta drop from another ride. Whatever respiratory infection is it hasn't gone away. No good for the high altitude. Can hardly ride at sea level.
If anyone has time, go ride Hole in the Ground. One of my favorites.

    May 28, 2013

  • Vinh P.

I will have to drop out and wait until the whole trail is rideable.

    May 28, 2013

    • Vinh P.

What is the carpool situation for Sunday? Do you have room for one more?

      May 28, 2013

    • Vinh P.

      Thanks Krista. See you there.

      May 28, 2013

Sorry to drop so late. Family needs will keep us away. Hope you all enjoy. Look forward to a ride in the future.

    1 · May 27, 2013

No worries Irina and Marv. We hope you'll join us soon. Take care of your family.

      May 28, 2013

  • Marv S.

Not because of the extra climbing because I know I need it, Irina and I have to drop. A tough year with some family issues are going to keep us away. Have fun and happy to donate our campsite to anyone that needs it. Sorry David.

I've added everyone that was wait listed. Worst case scenario is we have to self shuttle some folks. Also the price for shuttle is 15. If people going up Sunday want to carpool please reply to this message I know Daphne mentioned riding up with me anyone else?

    May 23, 2013

    • Vinh P.

Hi David, I am interested in carpooling with you on Sunday.

Wanted to go but some stuff came up. Thanks life

    May 14, 2013

  • Joe S.

David I'm not planning to bring my truck. I'm carpooling with Naomi so we''ll just have room for our two bikes (may be able to fit a 3rd if needed).

    May 14, 2013

  • David

Can I get a count on who's got bike capacity to help with shuttling? I know I can fit six bike in the back of the chevy. the company should be able to get us 14 spots or so. just need to see how many total we can get up there if we need to use shuttle vehicles.

    May 14, 2013

  • Carlton

I too will have to gift one of the waitlistees with my spot. I really wanted to do this ride, but turns out my brother will be in town that same weekend.
I'll be down to do a different weekend in Tahoe, or Downieville.

    May 10, 2013

  • Armando

Can't make it this weekend, found out I have family commitment to attend.

    May 10, 2013

  • Claudia C.

I have not been training as I should due to work and personal matters :-(

    May 2, 2013

  • Chris G.

I'm a big maybe, so if someone is on the waitlist and wants to go, by all means let them go first!

    March 9, 2013

  • David

Ideally I'll head up the Strong Beginner+ group and have someone familiar with our route lead the really fast people. Really though I'd like for us to try and keep somewhat together as that is the point of riding with a group. If you're the type that insists on hammering out a ride super fast and gets annoyed with waiting on slower people this ride may frustrate you. Especially since I myself will charge for a few miles and then stop to take in the amazing views and snap some photos. I'll have the good camera too, which means riding up ahead every so often to get some good actions shots of people.

So here's the update everyone... I finally got a hold of someone at Flumetrail Bikes and found out the the opening day for the Flume is May 11, That's the soonest they're willing to reserve us a spot on the Shuttle for June 2nd. However they can't completely confirm that TRT will be entirely ridable on that date. They're pretty confident as were the folks at downieville outfitters. I'll be opening up the ride to a total of 20 people, however the shuttle only carries 14 so we'll still need a couple large capacity vehicles to get the rest of us up the hill. I have no problem leaving my truck up at the top and it will hold no fewer than 6 bikes. I'd like to be able to open the ride to more, however with the shuttle requirements and being such a long ride I think two groups of 10 is going to be plenty busy already.

    May 2, 2013

  • Chaz

Going to Colorado instead. Have fun and I hope to do this one with y'all one day soon.

    1 · April 29, 2013

    Hoping to join in!

    April 5, 2013

  • David

Ok people here's the skinny. I'm opening up this ride to 20 so all of you waiting right now are on the going list. We tested it today and were able to fit five bikes with room for at least one more in my truck. that means with the shuttle and my truck we can carry 18 so if Joe ;) drives up with his truck or someone else with a four bike capacity we'll have plenty of room without needing both the shuttle companies vehicles.

    March 3, 2013

    • David

Yup that's it Armando. Thanks for clearing that up.

      March 4, 2013

    • Rick

Looks like I got in on this. So, I'm wondering if a friend of mine can go along. He lives by Donner, and owns a truck. He might be able to assist with transpo, and also let someone else crash at his place, though I need to check. I'll be hanging out there. I mentioned the meetup and he was interested in going along.

Hey everyone I still haven't heard back from Flumetrailbikes, so as of right now our actual ride day is in the air. It will be either Saturday or Sunday depending on which day is even numbered and falls on the weekend.

Would love to ride this trail!

    March 3, 2013

  • GREGORIO M.

David! Can you make reservations for 2 shuttle's ?? If more people join this ride

    February 21, 2013

    • Joe S.

IN the past the shuttle company has also has a smaller vehicle with a 4 or 6 bike capacity that they have used to supplement the bike carrying. May need to advise them ahead of time though since another driver is required.

      February 22, 2013

    • David

yeah, I tried calling yesterday but got no answer and they haven't responded to my email yet either. I'll try again but Joe is right, last year they had a smaller vehicle to shuttle a few additional people. Either way I have no doubts that we will be able to bump up the count on this ride. Last year we ended up doing a fair amount of shuttling anyway as we ended the ride at different point than we started. Also the shop has moved since last year which may make things easier.

      February 23, 2013

  • David

FYI everyone in case you're new to the group this isn't actually my first ride at TRT/Flume I just got lazy and copied the ride from last year. ;)

    February 21, 2013

    • David

wow! this ride filled up fast! Krista you're going to love it

      February 21, 2013

    • Rick

Hi Krista, I lived the last 10 years up that way. Not something that many think about but there are risks to going 0 - to 6000ft and exercising. Headaches are common, the air is drier so dehydration happens faster, and increased solar radiation. Use sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and watch out for the signs of acute mountain sickness: headache, nausea, shortness of breath, impaired cognition and balance.

  • David

Hey Louis I thought you were joining us for this one. What happened?

    February 21, 2013

  • Jon N.

Is this mostly a downhill, all-mountain, or xc ride? I want to figure out what bike to take.

    February 21, 2013

    • David

It's xc but Trt has some nice technical rocky sections there is a fair amount of high altitude climbing but its mostly a downhill ride.
