Early morning dad's ride... Fremont Older Intermediate pace 10+ Mi.

Dad's Ride Series...

Fremont Older

So by now I think most of you know that I'm a new dad.  It's my first so I'm still trying to learn how to balance everything and still get out to ride.  This means a little less time to mess around (or sleep) and earlier start times.  I'd like to start doing a series of rides starting early in the morning for those dads (and moms) that have families to think about and do things with.  Think similar to my intermediate after work rides, which are known to be relatively quick with few stops.  Not really a beginner ride, but if you're a stronger beginner or better you should be fine on these rides for now.  They won't be terrible challenging until I find a groove and a following.  Then we'll custom tailor the rides to match those those who want to show up for them.  Probably doing more Skeggs and Demo short loops.

This first ride of the series will be held at one of my favorite quick spin locations.  It's not a technically challenging location at all, but there are some options for decent climbs which I'd like to see us all hit this time around.  My plan is to have wheels up by 8:05 and head up the hill for a quick warm up.  Then we'll head over to the Toyon trails (hopefully still open) and climb through all three.  Then we'll go over to Maises before going out and back to the water tower.  From the tower we'll head back the way we came to do the three Toyons in reverse.  Then to finish we'll head over to Seven Springs.  I'm hoping to keep the ride moving at a good pace without too many stops at all so 2 hours should be enough time for the entire route.

NOW THE NITTY GRITTY...

San Jose Mountain Biking is a group riding community.  We don't really encourage individuals to come out to our rides that want to do their own ride five minutes after starting with us.  We start together and stick together.  No one gets dropped period.  Of course if you have to bail for any reason, that's fine just make sure either myself or who ever is sweeping the ride knows and makes sure you know your way back to the cars.  SJMTB is okay with guests on our rides, even kids, just remember that they are your guests and as such they agree to the same terms of meetup that you did when you signed up http://www.meetup.com/terms/.  We have a very casual and fun attitude about ourselves and try not to take ourselves too seriously, heck we're just mountain bikers.  There are very few other rules we follow other than the stick together one...

• RIDERS MUST WEAR A HELMET ON ALL RIDES.

• THIS IS A MOUNTAIN BIKE GROUP... RIDE A MOUNTAIN BIKE (CX IS OKAY I SUPPOSE)

• RIDERS MUST OBEY THE RULES OF THE TRAILS.  THIS INCLUDES THE COMMON ETIQUETTE RULES OF RIGHT OF WAY (HIKERS, HORSES, THEN BIKES)

• RESPECT THE TRAILS AND EACH OTHER

• LAST BUT NOT LEAST... HAVE FUN!

I am usually pretty easy to get a hold of if you have any questions, related to the group, or bikes in general (I'm a bit of a bike geek).  Feel free to email me directly via the meetup link or @ [masked]

Thanks and happy trails,

David Butler

Cool place to ride for a work out better than my local trail. Thanks for setting up David. Look forward to more early am rides. That's when I can ride almost all the time.

Hi David! Already signed up for a ride this weekend so I have to skip this one. But I will be a member of the new dad's group really soon I am looking forward to this series. This is exactly what I was hoping for as I will be in a similar predicament of trying to balance a new family member while finding time to ride. Hope to see you on the next ride.
