Sand Point Overlook Mid-Week 'After Work' - Advanced Beginner+ Pace

An endurance building ride among beautiful redwoods and a gorgeous view at the top if it's clear. The descent is always memorable.

Tires roll at 6:30pm to beat the sunset 2hrs later. Plan to be there early if you're coming over Hwy 17.

MILEAGE & ELEVATION: 18 miles round-trip with 1600ft of climbing.

PACE: Advanced Beginner+. I plan to go slowly with only minimal stopping.

*Carry a light if you have one. Excerpted Description from The route follows Aptos Creek Fire Trail for its entire uphill journey to Sand Point Overlook. Nearly 100% in a shady, young-growth redwood forest along the cool riparian environments of Aptos and Bridge Creeks, the trail is actually a wide dirt road, generally smooth and hard-packed. The first 3.8 miles or so is a gentle grade, almost imperceptible. Thereafter, the road steepens from 7% to 9% grade and the rest of the way is a moderately strenuous grind, interspersed with a few brief gentle stretches. When you reach Sand Point Overlook—and you’re blessed with a fairly clear day—terrific views of Monterey Bay, the city of Santa Cruz, portions of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and surrounding ridges are your reward.
