South Shore Walk

Joe Steffen will lead a 2.5 hour, 4.5 mile walk through the South Shore neighborhood starting at the South Shore Cultural Center, past the beach, through the nature area, and through the Jackson Park Highlands Landmark District, following this route. We will walk even if it is raining, so bring an umbrella or poncho. Please do not bring your dog.

Directions: CTA: Take Bus 6 Jackson Park Express from downtown to 71st and South Shore Drive and walk through the gate into the South Shore Cultural Center.
Metra: Take the Metra Electric District Line to the South Shore station and follow the above directions.
Driving: Take Lake Shore Drive through Jackson Park, keep left onto Marquette Drive, which becomes South Shore Drive. At 71st St. turn left into the South Shore Cultural Center. Parking is $1/hour.
If you arrive after we have departed, wait for us to return to the Meetup location at about 10:30 AM.

As usual, I enjoyed the walk and learning more about one of the city's neighborhoods. Fortunately, it was a perfect day for a morning outdoors.

What another great enclave in the city--I never knew Jackson Park Highlands existed. I'm glad we were able to catch a glimpse into our city's past history, once again, and I thank Joe for sharing his historical input with us. This walk made my day all the more enjoyable.

Great walk, as always... my niece was amazed at how quickly the older crowd was walking but she enjoyed it and wants to join us again in the next walk. :-)

    Good evening everyone,
I'm hoping I will be able to make the "walk" on Saturday. My sciatica is giving me the blues......

I've not been on this walk, unfortunately just remembered I'm at a clinic this Sat. Enjoy, see everyone next time. Reception rooms and views are stunning at cultural center.

I went to Aquinas High School (72nd and Clyde)...the school is no longer there but it will be fun to visit the area once again.

wow it is amazing to me that the South Shore Country Club basically shut down because it refused to allow Jews and Blacks in 1967. In Chicago. A lot of people escaped TO Chicago to get away from all that. They decided to go out of business rather than allows Jews and Blacks.
