Zinfandel Fright Night

  • Oct 26, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Davids House

If the California Zinfandel grape were a broadway musical, it would surely be "Wicked". For starters, much like Elphaba from Wicked, the California Zinfandel is misunderstood. Its very origins have remained a mystery to experts until very recently. Secondly, like Elphaba, the Zinfandel grape has a definite wild side. Criticized by some for being too "hot" (too alcoholic) the Zinfandel grape is certainly not for the faint at heart. And finally, just like the broadway musical, Zinfandels are just out right Wicked Good!

And insomuch as Halloween is the perfect holiday to celebrate wicked things, it is the perfect holiday to celebrate Zinfandels!

One of our Awesome New Members, David, has graciously offered to host "Zinfandel Fright Night" in his home. Bring the spookiest Zinfandel you can find, and feel free to come in Costume if you wish....it is Halloween after all! :)

Recommendations include:

Ghost Pines Zinfandel

Bogle Phantom (60% Zinfandel)

Ravenswood Zinfandel

7 Deadly Zins

Norman Vineyards Zinfandel Monster

Zombie Zin

Manzanita Creek Zin Witch Zinfandel

Or any other Zinfandel you love...

FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED BY OUR GRACIOUS HOST, and DIRECTIONS/ADDRESS WILL BE SENT TO ATTENDEES ONLY PRIOR TO EVENT.

Thanks Kristen go organizing this fun event. And to you too David for all your wonderful hospitality. I now consider myself to have a great understanding of Zins and their diverse characteristics! A big wow in my book.

Thanks all! What fun! The deck didn't burn down and we negotiated things the like of Poiziin and Zinzilla without anybody getting seriously injured. I'd call that a victory! Too bad the Red Socks weren't able to say the same last night (sorry Kirsten). Anyway, looking forward to seeing everybody again at future events.

    Or Apothic Dark?

    October 26, 2013

    • David

My guess is Apothic will be represented. You might consider bringing your Italian Zin, as it will likely be the only one of its type. We'll just call it "Scary Good" and that way it will fit in with all the other bottles!

      October 26, 2013

    • Dawn

Got it. Maybe we can do red blends another time!

      October 26, 2013

  • Kirsten

I realize this is a wine night, but this Boston bred Red Sox fan is wondering if it might be possible to at least have Game 3 of the World Series on in the background?? :)

    October 26, 2013

    • David

      Will do!

    Apothic Red..

    1 · October 26, 2013

Would you all be too upset if I brought a French blend?
"Wicked Red" from Hobnob? Described as chocolate butter?
    Tasting at Wegmans. It's lovely.

      Sounds great Dawn...Bring it! :)

I have individually emailed Amy, Mary and Kurt....if anyone else still needs the address, please let me know! Look forward to seeing you all tonight!

    1 · October 26, 2013

  • David

I trust everyone has now received the address for tomorrow night (7:00 pm) Although there is somewhat limited guest parking in front of my place, there is a pool facility with ample parking which sits about 100 yards or so down the hill from my place. It can't be missed. Some folks are coming at around 4:00pm pacific time, while others are coming at 7:00ish east coast time (Haha Carla, sorry to single you out. I kid).

Should anyone have additional questions please feel free to message me. Looking forward to what will surely be a good time with some scary good wine!

Lol, I am here now :( . So sad for me :(

      October 25, 2013

    • Laura

I don't have the address, perhaps because I got the last spot! Send to me, please... :)

      October 25, 2013

  • Amy

So happy to be able to attend this event. It will be my very first meet up. :) I can bring 7 deadly zins, or if that is already represented I can bring my all time fave "plunger head " zin. Doesn't really fit with the scary theme but it's good. Please Chime in and let me know which I should bring. Thanks.

    1 · October 25, 2013

      Bring both! Problem solved!!

      October 25, 2013

    • Kirsten

      October 25, 2013

  • Carla

Hmmm... I'm confused.... Does this party start or end at 7pm?

From this link, it appears to start at 7pm.
But from the reminder I got from [masked], it said that it started at 4pm:

    Zinfandel Fright Night
    When Sat Oct 26,[masked]pm – 7pm (PDT)
Where Davids House (TBD, Leesburg, VA)

    Requesting clarification....

    October 25, 2013

    • Carla

Nevermind... Just now noticed the (PDT).
(and I haven't even started drinking yet...).

Looking forward to tomorrow! I went with a "spooky woods" theme with Gnarled Vine and Ravenswood Zins . Although, it was very hard to step away from the "Cult" Cabernet :-). Maybe next year....

    1 · October 25, 2013

  • Rebecca

Sorry for the late change. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it but will try to send the "7 Deadly Zins" on with someone else that will be there.

    October 25, 2013

Sadly I have to be out of town next weekend so I have to give up my spot! Have fun!

There is also Earthquake Zinfandel from CA. Scary in a different way. I just finished a bottle. Over two days. Not a weak one. 15.5% content.

  • Meg

David, I had the Ghost Pines Zin the other night and I loved it! Oh and I tried the Vampire and it wasn't too bad either.

    1 · October 15, 2013

    • David

Cool. I'm really hoping somebody scores a bottle of Old Ghost Zinfandel or a bottle of Norman Vineyards Zin Monster. Those would be very nice additions to what is shaping out to be a pretty good looking selection already!

      October 15, 2013

  • David

Quick update regarding our upcoming Zinfandel Fright Night. So far, we have folks bringing Phantom Bogle, Poi Zin, and even a selection from Vampire Vineyards! A second category of "Scary Good Zinfandels" has emerged which would seem to include any beloved Zinfandel irrespective of its name.
In this category we have an offering from Sivas-Sonoma, at least one Turley, a Ridge, and an Orin Swift. Good stuff!

For those of you who are still trying to come up with just the right bottle, here are some very spooky Zinfandels (none of which seem to be on the offering list so far). Most of these will require online ordering but there's still plenty of time to do so! The asterisks are for those of you who want to be heroes!

    Zinzilla Zinfandel *
    Old Ghost Zinfandel *
    Norman Vineyards Zinfandel Monster **
    7 Deadly Zins
    Crow Ridge Zinfandel *
    Ghost Pines Zinfandel
Chronic Cellars Dead Nuts Zinfandel **
    Zombie Zinfandel
    Ravenswood Zinfandel

Looking forward to a fun filled evening!

    October 15, 2013

  • Douglas E.

I have a bottle of the Phantom, but I see that it will already be represented. I may go with 'scary good' (imo) and bring a Ridge (not sure which one yet though)

    1 · October 14, 2013

    • David

That sounds great! Certainly nothing wrong with the "Scary Good" theme.

      October 14, 2013

  • David

Excellent, I think we'll end up with a very nice variety of Zins. Thanks!

    October 14, 2013

    WooHoo!
As I said, bringing a "scary GOOD" bottle of:
    Sivas Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel...

If a spot opens up, I'd love to bring a "scary GOOD" bottle:
    Siva Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel.

Ah yes, Poizin (Zinfandel) “The Wine to Die for”. What a clever choice. Will try alongside Meg's Phantom Bogle. Chilling indeed! Well done!

I love the sound of this event but unfortunately I will be in a Smithsonian Associates seminar all day and don't think I would be up for the drive out to Leesburg that night. I will definitely catch you all for another event because I thoroughly enjoyed the last one.

    September 28, 2013

  • Meg

Looking forward to this! Bringing the Phantom Bogle and can't wait to try the Turley!
