Our Story

Whitie Hubert spent 40 successful years in the construction business, but when he retired, the vineyard beckoned. Born and raised on a farm in Ohio, Whitie had spent his youth growing grapes for Welch's Grape Juice Company with his father and brother. So in 1975, the promise of a return to viticulture led Whitie and his wife Margaret to purchase 475 acres of prime Virginia farmland nestled along the Potomac river. In 1985, they built Tarara where, today, they produce award-winning wines.

For Whitie and Margaret, sharing wine is a celebration of life, and sharing their vineyard in this set-apart place is an affirmation of all the things they love best: nature, music, art, and architecture.

Whether you choose to share their celebration at a concert by the lake on a warm summer's eve, picking fruit with your kids in the orchards, hiking 6 miles of trails, or just tasting wines in the Winemaker's cave, Whitie and Margaret welcome you.

The Vineyard

Fine wines begin in the vineyard.
In our 60 acres of vineyards set on 475 acres of land above the Potomac River, we focus on just one thing: making superb wine. As the river wraps around Tarara, it protects it from freezes in the winter and keeps it cooler in the summer, producing lush and flavorful fruit.

The special climate and soils of our vineyard help create grapes with intense flavors, soft firm tannins and good acid balance. The wines produced from these excellent grapes are age worthy as well as being very approachable at release.

We handpick and use the best fruit available and handle the wine with care through every step of the winemaking process. Each year brings new grapes with their own distinct character and each year, Tarara's wines are carefully crafted to showcase their nature. They are always subtle, well-structured, food friendly wines.

Visit the Winery Tasting room which offers 15 exceptional wines from our vineyard. With the help of our experienced staff, discover the relationship between the land, the fruit and the wine.

Meet Jordan Harris Winemaker

Jordan Harris was born and raised on a small farm town of Erin, Ontario. He developed his passion for food, and ultimately wine, when his family moved to the Niagara Peninsula.

Jordan attended the Georgian College for Culinary Arts in Barrie, Ontario. Upon completion, Jordan moved back to Niagara to work in a fine Italian restaurant with a life long friend and explore his love for wine. He enrolled at Niagara College in the Winery and Viticulture Technician Program, and competed in a student sommelier competition. Jordan placed First in Canada, for the Inter-Rhone-Cotes du Rhone International Sommelier Challenge. This competition lead him to France where he received Third Place in this prestigious International event.

After graduating with high honors from Niagara College, Jordan worked with several wineries in the Niagara region. Jordan returned to Niagara College’s Teaching Winery to create some of Canada’s top wines - - including Canada’s number one Chardonnay at the Canadian Wine Awards and several national and international award-winning Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varieties.

Jordan received honors from the Ontario Hostelry Institute for being one of the "Top 30 Under 30" professionals throughout Canada’s entire food and beverage industry. He has been named by one of Canada’s leading wine publications, Wine Access, as one of Canada's "great, up-and-coming Winemakers".

Jordan has made wine for wineries of all sizes, from those that produce several hundred thousand cases per year to just recently, Tarara, which produces a few thousand, hand-crafted, ultra-premium wines each year. Jordan and Tarara seem a perfect match for creating wines that are second to none.

Just before joining us at Tarara, Jordan made a big step showing that there is more to him than a love for wine. He showed his other passion by marrying his wife Jennifer.

Alternate Route from Leesburg, VA From the intersection of Route 7 and Route 15, follow 15 North approximately 4 miles to Limeston School Rd./Route 661. Turn right on 661 and follow to the end (3 miles). Turn right onto Spinks Ferry Road/Route 657. Follow Route 657 2 miles to Lost Corner Rd/Route 662. Turn left onto Route 662. Follow Route 662 1 mile to Tarara Winery entrance on the right.

From Point of Rocks, MD Take Route 15 South for approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto Route 658. At the stop sign turn left onto Route 662. Follow Route 662 for 1 mile to Tarara Winery entrance on the left.
