Factory Tour of Steinway Pianos

  • This location is shown only to members

8 Wired NY members will be invited on a guided tour of the Steinway factory, in Long Island City, Queens. Steinway and Sons has made pianos for over 150 years, and they're doing it here in our city! Crazy, no? This had to be booked way in advance, and is one of the last tours before they stop for the summer. Please only reserve if you are sure that you can attend. It's on a school day, in other words. The N train goes to the factory. Unfortunately, cameras are strictly forbidden in the factory. There must be some super-secret woodworking techniques on display. Shhhh! You can bring your sketchpad and #2 pencil. A virtual tour is viewable at
http://www.steinway.c.... A great documentary, "Note by Note, the Making of Steinway L1037" is available on DVD. A waiting list will be available, and more info will be posted closer to the event.

Very educational and fascinating to see all the steps that go in to making a piano. It was a rare experience.

I had a lovely time. It was great to see what is involved in making a piano and to see an old-fashioned factory like that. I am glad Steinway is still in business. I enjoyed the Greek lunch some of us had together after the tour too.
