Why be a valentine when you can be a mistress! Let me introduce to you the mistresses of the last 400 years...some surprises in there too!

The allure of women has driven men and in some cases women to war, fashioned identities in their name, risked lives and livelihoods and created some of the most enduring and beautiful art and poetry in the history of the last four centuries, all in the pursuit of a tiny taste of forbidden fruit.

We begin our tour in Covent Garden, the former stomping ground of the infamous Nell Gwyn, mistress to Charles II. She described herself as 'the English whore' and yet here we are talking about her 360+ years on! What an impact and what a legacy for a girl from the slums!

Through the tiny passages around Covent Garden and into fashionable St James'.

We explore what it meant to be a mistress. Sometimes it ended well with riches beyond comprehension other times our leading ladies found themselves in crippling poverty. With everyone of our 12 women they made an impact far beyond their birth status.
