Re Sunday book discussion...It was a very good meeting where a lot of people express very thought out positions on a wide range of issues. Though I was in a bit of a minority, I was heard with respect. As I stated, I would like to see humanists develop ideas about the meaningfulness of human (and other) life independent of the religious biases of our received culture. Though many people will say they fear a vengeful god that would send them to the firey pit for not believing, they also fear the question of life's meaning in the absence of the pat answers provided by traditional religious approaches. I assert that the spontaneous creativity of our incredible universe is a more than sufficient answer to this issue. I'd like to see humanist expand on this and create other answers to the meaning issue. Though we can learn a lot from each other, in the end, how to live a meaningful life is an exercise for each individual.

I wish some of the atheists I heard at a recent meeting would have some compassion for people of faith. For example, not all Christians are fundamentalists, nor are all fundamentalists Christians. This group would not dare make negative judgments about Moslems, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, or the religions of indigenous peoples, but Christians are fair game. I immediately noticed this bias when I joined the Unitarian Church a full 30 years ago. Many people I've met at humanist meetings seem to have an almost adolescent rebellious attitude toward religionists; hmmm, where could that have come from? Are we, with our blind faith in Science, really as open-minded as we think we are? Salman Rushdie said in The Satanic Verses: "The opposite of belief is not unbelief, for unbelief is itself a form of belief; the opposite of belief is doubt." Are you a believer---or a doubter? I am the latter---agnostic. I'm uncommitted, but I'm open.

I met some friendly and interesting folks and also found a couple of good people with whom I was somewhat acquainted from another Meetup group. Although I was disappointed that the original speaker was unavoidably detained due to the weather conditions, I found the fill-in speaker to be quite interesting and his ideas very thought-provoking. I enjoyed celebrating Darwin Day and especially enjoyed the delicious cake that was generously provided, for which I thank the creator, whoever he or she might be.

I don't understand the need to find enjoyment in ridiculing beliefs, and finding fault with religions even though valid in no way offers evidence that there is no God.
