Migrating WordPress

  • Mar 12, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Fathom Creative

Whether it is changing hosts, moving a client from staging to production, or moving off WordPress.com and onto your own self hosted WordPress install, there almost always comes a time that you'll need to move WordPress. This month, learn about exporting the content of your WordPress site and importing it into a new one. Included in this will be a discussion on why you might need to migrate and tips to think about to make your migration smooth and easy.

This Month's presenter is Russell Heimlich, Front end web developer at the Pew Research Center, co-organizer of the Washington DC WordPress meetup and maker of http://dummyimage.com. Follow him on twitter at @kingkool86

This looks like it would be useful for folks looking to develop sites locally using real content from a live wordpress install: http://technosailor.com/2013/03/15/tutorial-developing-locally-on-wordpress-with-remote-database-over-ssh/

You mean for DB integrity or to prevent from posting Lorem Ipsum and cat pictures?

      March 15, 2013

    • Russell H.

Well if you're connected to the live database locally anything you post will also go to the live database which the live site is pulling content from. There's also the issue that you could break things on the live site. Active plugins are stored in the database for example.

Last minute change of plans. I have a late client meeting and probably won't be able to make it. I want to free up the spot for someone that can definitely make it.

Thanks! Sorry to hear you can't make it.

How does the wait list work? Thanks!

    March 11, 2013

    • Russell H.

When people change their status to Not Going people on the wait list get moved up.

Which Metro stop is the best to use? Any street or garage parking nearby?

    March 7, 2013

    • Tom W.

Metro is the best bet. Street parking is possible, but you need to allow 30-40 minutes to try and find spot. Garage parking is very scarce. I drove last time and allowed 35 minutes for parking. GOT A SPOT about 6-7 blocks away, which is the same distance as the Metro stops.

Great topic but I can't make it. Reminder to everyone that this location is best served by Metro, not driving. ;)

Shameless self promotion: we did a huge migration from a straight ASP site to Wordpress a few months back. It was a big project.

There were, literally, 500+ individual ASP files. Here's how we did it: http://www.jungermedia.com/blog/anatomy-of-a-wordpress-migration-the-great-cts-guides-move/

    March 6, 2013

    • Russell H.

Spoiler alert: Did it by hand. That must have been fun.

Having a staging site and a back-up site would be most helpful.
