Re: Columbus WordPress Meetup list: "Two things"

Lack of advanced topics is one of the main reasons I stopped attending the meetups myself. I created a WordPress meetup in Marysville scratch that itch, but location and finding a venue to host it was an issu, Few people came so I closed the Marysville WordPress meetup 6 months after I started it. I would definitely be interested in helping out with this. If there are others, please put me in touch with them. I work for Kanopi Studios now and we’re looking to give back more on a community level, so this would be a win win imo. If I can help, let me know. Thanks!

Two things

Sorry to Spam everyone, but I have been thinking that we need to break our group up a bit to create an intermediate to advanced WordPress group. I know we have close to 1,000 followers and we only get roughly about 25 people that come to the monthly meetups. I'm not sure if we just don't offer enough for some advanced users who don't want to discuss the basics or if the first Thursday of the month is just a bad day.

So, I have mentioned this at the Meetup meetings and a few people said they might be interested in spinning off an advanced meeting. I've talked to our hosting location, the wonderful Improving Offices near Easton and they are open to us having a second meeting day at their location.

We can either meet the same day and time and have a beginner session and an advanced session running at the same time (they have 2 rooms we can use, but we just have to make sure it doesn't conflict with another group meeting) or we can choose another day and time during the month.

I know that I currently don't have the bandwidth to take on planning another meeting, but I'm looking for a couple of people who might be willing to share duties. All you have to do is line up speakers and topics (or present yourself) that address 'advanced' issues. Development and code would be addressed in this session, as well as delving into Custom Theme Development, Custom Plugin Development, etc.

I know a few of you have mentioned that you are interested in more advanced discussions, so this is your chance. I am happy to take care of planning from the standpoint of the group as a whole and helping to manage the Meetup site and posting the sessions, but need one or two people to share the leading and planning.

Another possibility is just adding a regular second meeting day and alternating between doing either an advanced session or a co-working session. I have discussed a co-working session before, but we might not be able to do that at Improving, so let's first talk about how often we want to offer an advanced session. (or other possibilities we might want to do)

A co-working session is essentially, just bringing your laptop and coming to do some work together or getting help from someone else. But if we did this, some intermediate to advanced people would have to commit to coming in case other need help.

Like I said, we have had some people offer to volunteer and I can come also, but we'd need to set up a more formal schedule to keep something like this going. So we'd need to know if there is interest in either of these things first. So, let me know if you think either of these things is a good idea, something you'd like, or something you'd like to help organize. :)

OK, now onto the second thing. I was chatting with another member and we thought it might be fun to do a Happy Hour. Now that it's spring, (knock on wood) it might be a good time to meet and hang out socially. I'd definitely need help planning this as I haven't done a Happy Hour in a long time, but send me your suggestions for places and times and let's see what we can come up with. Ideally, it might be a cool smaller place that doesn't get a super huge crowd, so we can mill around, but I've been to Pins recently and that was fun, too.

If you have suggestions, comments or want to help organize, shoot me a message at [address removed] (remind me who you are and that you're from the WP meetup, please). If you respond to this message, everyone will get it :)

Thanks for your time!
