What we're about

Start your day with a burst of creativity!

Write & Shine morning writing workshops, retreats, events and online courses are open to everyone, whether you’re new to writing, have some experience or simply want more creativity into your working day. The programme is led by writer Gemma Seltzer who says, "I set up this group because I love meeting and writing alongside fellow writers. I wanted to create a friendly atmosphere for writing, outside of academic or institutional programmes."

Rather than share the work we produce in a Write & Shine workshop, we focus on generating new material and tapping into our imaginations in the morning. The chance for feedback from the tutor and other writers can help improve writing, but for some writers it can damage confidence or hinder creativity. After each workshop, you'll leave with a few pieces to develop in their own time.

We find inspiration from modern life and the seasons, while exploring the craft of writing. Research shows we’re more creative in the morning. When we wake, we’re incredibly sensitive to the sights and sounds of our environment. Join us to discover why this is the best time to think, dream and imagine.

Sequence
Thursday 3 February [masked]am)

In our season all about time, we’ll explore sequencing, repetition and patterns in our writing. We’ll think about early experiments in moving images, comic strips and the work of artists such as David Hockney, Dora Maurer and Ai Weiwei who use sequences and careful arrangements to show the world in a new way and invite us to practice our skills in looking, in slowing down.

Write & Shine offers a programme of early morning writing workshops, retreats, events and an online library of self-guided courses.

This winter, we’ll host workshops, retreats and events taking inspiration from the cool, dark days of winter: the migrating birds and the falling snow. The programme also explores the nature of time, clocks and bells, rituals and seasons, time travel and historical writing, how fast time can pass and how softly, too.

The programme runs virtually via Zoom, UK time. A link to the Zoom meeting is sent by email 24 hours.

Our sessions are ideal for both beginners & those needed a burst of creativity as we don't share any writing produced. The focus is on generating new material and tapping into your imagination in the morning.

Historical
Tuesday 8 February [masked]am)

Journey into the past with writing that evokes the colours, textures, sights, sounds and smells of times gone by. Bells - morning writing workshop on 10 February (via Zoom)

Online event

£22.00

Bells
Thursday 10 February [masked]am)

In Venice, there are more than 100 bell towers with the largest bell—the Marangona in St. Mark’s Basilica—chiming only at midday and then at midnight. Bells are full of mystery: the bronze Dhammazedi Bell, is thought to be the biggest bell ever cast, but has been lost under the deep rivers of present day Myanmar.

We’ll write about bells ringing, and bell ringers, and how bells measure the passage of time. Join us!
