Hi guys I just wanted to say thank you and to ask a question. One thank you to all the people who took time to correct, explain, and point out things to me in the returned pieces; I really appreciate it. It was a big help. Thank you for the advice and book suggestions. Sam thank you for the letter. It was important to know that chapter one was bogged down by heavy exposition and that it was weak. Two, I was so excited to receive positive comments about my piece I actually forgot to ask questions. So I am hoping that someone can answer this question. Parents were wooden and unbelievable. What made them unbelievable? Was it throughout the piece or in certain sections? Gene, you said that my piece had major problems. Would you be willing to list the problems? I know there were pov problems, character issues, awkward wordy sentences and comma usage problems. Are there additional problems not listed.

My piece was the cat story. Thanks for your help guys. Catch ya next month. :)

Gene I forgot to thank you for taking the time to respond to my post and for giving me advice regarding my grammar and basic writing skills. I really appreciate it. The next 4-6 months I will be working on those areas. Thanks. :)

Most professional writers would tell you that back story in chapter one slows the story. Worse yet, may actually be boring in some cases. They usually suggest weaving in the back story as the mss moves along.

There were 32 attending with 7 new people. Discussed editing during craft chat. We had three fine critiques.

Five of us enjoyed the afterparty at the Marathon Grill, where we discussed science fiction writers, the best of British TV, and how to transfer data between hard drives of obsolete home computers.

Hi! first timer here. How does the meeting work? Do we each bring something and break into workshop? Or do we read a couple selected pieces together and give feedback?

    May 31, 2013

    • patsy

Hello. Welcome. :) The first 45 minutes is dedicated to craft chat which covers some topic related to the craft of writing or publishing. After a 15 minute break we do critiques. The pieces were selected by Julius a week to a few weeks prior to our meeting. I hope that helps. :)

Liberty Place is in easy walking distance of Suburban Station. Driving really isn't necessary.

My problem: getting published in philosophy-and-consciousness, presently dominated by PhD's who obfuscate the issues. My present approach is to "virtually" attend conferences, contributing a manuscript -- or is this vanity publishing in a new guise?

I think you're confusing us with the other Meetup group with a similar name. We meet 1st Saturday of the month 2 pm at 17th & Chestnut (Liberty Place), 2nd floor, far end of the Food Court behind the velvet ropes.

I've sold two scripts so far and I'm an author. My memoir was published in 2012. Plus, since 2007 I've been a screenwriting judge for the Greater Philadelphia Film Festival's Shoot in Philadelphia Screenwriting Contest. So, I look forward to learning from the group and sharing my experiences and knowledge.
