Group member and publisher, Robin Sullivan, will share some of her vast knowledge about the changing publishing landscape:
The Changing Face of Publishing
The explosion in ebook sales (top selling format of all trade books as of February 2011 AAP report - at 29.5%), is turning the publishing world on its head. In the past, writers who became frustrated with the query-go-round of submitting to the New York big-six turned to indie press or self-publishing as a last resort. But in the ebook marketplace, the big-six has no more power than the little guys and indie authors are selling thousands, and even tens of thousands, of books on a monthly basis – without going through a major publisher.
This combined with a very slanted royalty rate (52.5% to publisher and 14.9% to the author) is making many authors jump ship to self-publishing. New York Times Best Selling Author Barry Eisler turned down a 2-book $500,000 contract to do just that. Bob Mayer followed suit and walked away from $750,000.
Robin has been tracking this revolution since it began and will provide data and insight on what the current environment in publishing is as well as important information to help you decide which path is best for you to pursue. She’ll provide some insight from other authors and how the revolution has affected them and of course answer questions on how you might benefit from the major changes that are going on.
