Touchstone, Dec 20, 2007

The seduction of a new enterprise--there is nothing quite like it! We are New Year's Day: fresh, straight, empowered--full of possibilities, devoid of problem--and why not. We who now commit to this way should begin well and enjoy the momentum of a new vision. As we launch the Worcester Writers Group (WWG) let us consider its three-word name as more than a convenient moniker, but rather as a touchstone--each for our pleasures, our purposes, and our pacts.

Worcester: A place of worth. A city of universities, hospitals, and museums, awash in commerce, culture, and history. She is the birthplace of Elizabeth Bishop, Charles Olson, Stanley Kunitz, and home to a large and learned population, so...where are all the writers groups? The WWG fills this gap by bonding with the city in two ways: First, the Worcester Writers Group uses Worcester in its name as a geographical and cultural identifier. Second, it uses the location of Worcester for administration, group meetings, and as many other activities as practicable.

Writers: People who write. Not people who talk about writing, who read about writing, who smell like writing, who hang around writing, but writers! Thinkers, too? Certainly, but writers need to perform the physical act of creating works in response to that thinking. Be their weapons pencil, pen, or pixels, writers prove their ilk by producing readable pages in numbers beyond the norms of common folk.

Group: People collected to a common purpose: To improve both the writing and its marketability by giving and receiving critique efficiently and with dignity. We need eyes that are not our own. We need schedules and accountability. We need voices of wisdom, hearts courage. We need others.

For years I have been looking for a writers group with the following three attributes: The group must be located in Worcester. It must consider a relatively broad range of writing: poetry, articles, essays, novels, short stories, etc. Lastly, and perhaps the most important to me, the group must be one that uses critique without apolog--with an energy that might discomfort the thin-skinned.

Do you think a group like that might just pop into existence, sort of with a magic "Poof?" Frankly...I was hoping, since I know what the administrative burdens are for such an enterprise. But one has not poofed yet, and every day gone carries excuses into the irretrievable past. it for it...

Poof! The WWG now exists.

Have you been looking for that touchstone, too? That place to try your work and watch for streaks of gold? The Worcester Writers Group is such a place. Read the guidelines and disclaimers, weigh the commitment, then consider visiting with us.

Gold is worth the work.
