Golden Thread Productions, the only theater company in the US that stages Middle Eastern plays exclusively, is holding a free two-day forum as part of its ReOrient 2012 Festival. The ReOrient Forum will explore Middle Eastern theater as well as poetry, dance and culture. Here is the agenda for Day 1 of the ReOrient Forum:

9:30-9:45 am: Welcome from Golden Thread Founder, Torange Yeghiazarian
9:45-10:45 am: Keynote address: Hamid Dabashi, Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia University. "In Our Own Words"--the current state of arts, identity, alterity and representation in the current climate and upheaval.
10:40-noon: Panel: Arab Spring and its dramatic reverberations. Hybrid Theatre Works brings together artists from the Arab World and Iran to reflect upon the socio-political transformation intiated by the current events in the Middle East.
noon-1 pm: Lunch break
1-2:20 pm: Panel: Staging the Middle East. Bay Area theater companies discuss the distinct challenges and rewards of staging plays about the Middle East.
2:30-4:30 pm: Special Presentation: Middle East America: A National New Plays Initiative and staged reading of Egyptian playwright, Yusef Guindi's 2011 winning play, "The Mummy and the Revolution"
4:30-5:00: 5-minute playwriting contest award and play presentations
5:10-6:20 pm: Panel: Comedic Counter-Terrorism. A playwright, a juggler and a standup comedian walk into a panel...
