Re: [yiddish-31] Fwd: העברה: Fw: Fw: Fw: Fw: איך מתחילה הסקלרוזה . . .באידיש (וגם בעברית)

The subject line is 'How does the "sclerosis" start .... in Yiddish' and
there is
(non-standard spelling) Yiddish doggerel below that, with a Hebrew
version as well. It looks like it has already been circulating among
Hebrew speakers who have some Yiddish 'nostalgia.'

Especially on a "Yiddish" group like this one, we should all know what
they say about nostalgia, that it just ain't what it used to be. Better
you should go read Philologos' latest article on Yiddish
http://forward.co... .

It's a shame that the first real Yiddish text in Hebrew characters on
this list (that I've seen) is something like this. The poster probably
meant it merely to be amusing rather than insulting to those who can't
read it ... and to those who can. Among ourselves, we can make fun of
ourselves, if it is really US we're making fun of. The poster's humor
here was, at least, self deprecating as well.

Every now and then, I come across far worse stuff like this "about"
Yiddish. It obviously doesn't take much, if any, knowledge of Yiddish to
repeat them. Most people who actually read and speak the language
usually smile politely and excuse themselves to get away as quickly as
possible. Too often, consciously or not, there is a mocking subtext to
such things: WE who, possibly, can recognize the words (or might, if we
could read the Hebrew letters) are so "self-evidently" superior to THEM
(who don't know and can't do any better) that WE are entitled to
ridicule them using half-remembered words from their language. Those who
offer such Yiddish 'nostalgia' need to know what it is they think they
are "remembering."
