Roseberry Topping & Cpt Cook Monument – 8.5 miles

Details
A walk I get asked about every year! This is a particularly rewarding walk with a very nice pub afterwards! However, it is one of my more challenging ones with plenty of ‘significant’ ascent and descent to go with the multiple panoramic views!!
We start from the pay&display car park located on the r.h.s. immediately as you enter Newton-under-Roseberry (if travelling from the south). As we are in the National Park, the standard fee for parking is £6 so you may wish to car share to mitigate the cost as well as to ensure we have less cars to park up. Toilets available. Postcode is TS9 6QS.
ALTERNATIVE PARKING: Beyond the car park & the pub (if travelling from the south), there is a long lay-by on your rhs which I believe charges £5.50. Allow ten minutes to walk to our meeting place.
From the car park, we start the 45 minute steep ascent to the top of the Topping at an elevation of 1,051 feet. En route to the ‘Top’, we climb a total of 200 steps and negotiate rocky uneven paths. Each time you pause for breath, you can admire the panoramic views!
We’ll have a short break at the summit from where the rest of our walking route is revealed.
A steep descent is followed by a level section before we climb again, although nowhere near as challenging as the first climb. We then have another level section before a gentle descent brings us to our lunch stop in a picnic area surrounded by trees.
After lunch, a longish gentle ascent brings us up to the Cpt. Cook Monument, which stands 51 feet tall amid more appealing vista’s of the area.
Having resumed our walk, we enter woodland and a steep but enjoyable descent ultimately passing through a small settlement whose chief property is called the White House, before we climb up a quiet road taking us into more woodland and then a short steep climb onto the top of the surrounding area, past the likely site of Cpt Cook’s family home and across a couple of fields to a folly (lovely view) at the base of Roseberry Topping.
An uneven path drops through woodland to a final level section giving us an easy stroll back to the car park and well-earned refreshment.
The Kings Head Inn is within walking distance of the car park. This is a large but pleasant pub with three outside seating areas and a view of Roseberry Topping ‘out the back’.
The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time.
Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring a packed lunch/drink/snacks with you.
PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING PLENTY OF LIQUID REFRESHMENT.
I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
