Dolly Sods Spring/Summer Backpacking Series - 1 of 7_15 miles trekk

Dolly Sods is one of the most desirable trekking areas for the free bird and adventure spirit.

This is the first of a series of 7 backpacking trips that will cover between 15 to 30 miles each one.

Trip is limited to 10 attendees.

A legend from the 1800 say: "In Randolph County, Virginia, is a tract of country containing from seven to nine hundred square miles, entirely uninhabited, and so savage and

inaccessible that it has rarely been penetrated even by the most adventurous.

The settlers on its borders speak of it with a sort of dread, and regard it as an ill-omened region, filled with bears, panthers, impassable laurel-brakes, and dangerous precipices. Stories are told of hunters having ventured too far, becoming entangled, and perishing in its intricate labyrinths.

The desire of daring the unknown dangers of this mysterious region, stimulated a party of gentlemen . . . to undertake it in June, 1851. They did actually penetrate the country as far as the Falls of the Blackwater, and returned with marvelous accounts of its savage grandeur, and the quantities of game and fish to be found there."

The Dolly Sods Wilderness — originally simply Dolly Sods — is a U.S. Wilderness Area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia, USA, and is part of the Monongahela National Forest (MNF) of the U.S. Forest Service.

Dolly Sods is a rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and lifeforms normally found much farther north in Canada. To the north, the distinctive landscape of "the Sods" is characterized by stunted (“flagged”) trees, wind-carved boulders, heath barrens, grassy meadows created in the last century by logging and fires, and sphagnum bogs that are much older. To the south, a dense cove forest occupies the branched canyon excavated by the North Fork of Red Creek.

The name derives from an 18th century German homesteading family — the Dahles — and a local term for an open mountaintop meadow — a "sods".

I know its last minute, but does anyone have any room in their car for one more (me)? I want to go, but I haven't RSVP'd yet b/c I dont have a ride. I have gas money if you can squeeze one more in your car. I can leave at any time on Friday. I live in Arlington but can meet you anywhere. People could park at my place (unrestricted, no permits needed) too if there was a group leaving from the Arlington/ Alexandria area... so we could do the 66 carpool if needed. I live right off 395 and glebe. 2728 s uhle st arlington 22206. I could also meet in Vienna carpool. Here's my #[masked]-3339.
Its supposed to be a beautiful weekend. YAY!
    :)

      May 14, 2013

    Hi Darwin,
When are you planning to be back Sunday? Is there an option for a Sat PM exit? I work Sunday early afternoon. .

    May 14, 2013

    • Evan L.

Thanks for the info. I'll try for another trip.

The reason I do say is not an option is because we will be deep on the mountain and even if you make back on your own to the parking lot you won't make on time back to the city.

    Hi all,

Just a quick question about cars. How many cars do we have so far? Wondering if I need to drive or if we already have enough cars, and can I get a ride with someone.

Hello Tammy, There will be 5 trips on different dates and every one to different areas on Dolly Sods starting on the top north area and coming down to Laneville Cabing on Red Creek, I have divided the whole Dolly Sods this way so we can visit it every single trail out there.
This one, the first will be very easy, we will have enought time to smell the flowers, I promise.
