Last minute mid-night hike - Old Rag to watch the Geminids Meteor Shower

The best meteor shower of 2012 peaks soon!

The peak of the Geminids meteor shower can be seen around the globe, starting on the night of December 13th and into the morning hours.

We expect between 60 to 120 meteors per hour under perfect conditions (far away from city lights, high altitudes, and no cloud cover). This meteor shower is named after the constellation Gemini (the twins), because its radiant (the point in the sky where meteors appear to come from) appears to be within this constellation.

Feel free to share this spectacular event with others!!!
If we decided to go, have in mind that will be extreme cold and we will be arriving to the Old Rag around 11PM. an to the summit around 1 AM.
This won't be an easy hike but is not impossible, a lot of extra warm layer will be required and bring whit us sleeping bag to help us stay warm is not a bad idea.

The hike was great, but we wasn't that lucky whit the star gazing, I did count 5 before I fell sleep when the sky got cloudy around 2:30 AM.
Any way is always fun to hike at midnight whit good company.
Thank you guys for showing up.

The peak was yesterday night all the way up to 3:30AM this morning, you guys! I drove to Boyce and set up my gear at a pitch-black Sky Meadow State Park neighborhood. The weather was super clear and crisp with temperature around 39' when I picked up my first hot coffee at Sheetz Gas Station. I started doing a lot of "WHOA-ing" in the car while driving around midnight when seeing a bunch just blazing slowly across the sky! Geminids definitely put even the brightest Rockfeller Center Christmas lights to shame. The show was SPECTACULAR!

It was really AMAAAHZING, they were everywhere this AM, lots of bright fireballs and long flares...I even saw some just grazing slowly across Jupiter! It went crazy around 1AM. I swear it must've been at least 150 per hour! I almost thought it was the 4th of July. My last meteor show was Taurids on November 12th and Leonids on November 17th --but it was only about 15-20/hour. So YEAH, this morning was a huge treat for me!!! I fell asleep with my ski-mask on around 4AM inside my -40 Marmot CWM Bag (I remember looking over my watch just before I fell asleep as by this time the rate slowed down at about 30 per hour) I woke up around 6AM and my red bag had turned into all white FULLY covered with frost! Soooo totally worth it, tho! It was a good to catch super bright Geminids this year! You'll still see some tonight, even though it would prolly slow down quite a bit... Hopefully there will be no clouds tonight for you guys. Layered up!!!

The hike itself will take 4 hr. round trip, + lest say 1 maybe 2 hr. looking at the meteors passing by.
We will on the open at the summit, not tree protection and win chill will be really really cold, we won't last 45 minutes if we are not prepare wearing the right clothes/gloves/hat to keeps from freezing our butts, absolutely extra warm layers are a must have.

I will TRY really hard to make this hike, but work might have the possibility of holding me back for the evening. I'll make another post here at 4PM on Thursday if I can come or not. If I can make it, I'll be more than happy to give people a lift.
